3DMark PC Benchmark Adds VR Rendering Preview

    Categories: News Bits

Futuremark, one of the biggest names in PC benchmarking software, has added VR rendering to their 3DMark program.

As we near the release of the first desktop consumer VR headsets, we also confront reality that rendering VR worlds is quite a bit more taxing than rendering for a standard monitor. Rendering the same amount of frames in VR takes more oomph from PC hardware due to the need to render two independent views, and render at resolutions far above 1080p.

Futuremark has announced that they’ve added experimental VR rendering to their popular 3DMark benchmarking software. This is a preliminary step which allows users to explore 3DMark’s GPU-taxing scenes in virtual reality, but doesn’t currently produce a formal benchmark rating, though we expect to see that functionality down the road when the company releases VRMark, which they announced back in June.

The feature was added in 3DMark’s holiday beta update along with a new interface for the program.
