If you’re looking to jump into either Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) or Resident Evil Village (2021) on a PC VR headset, you’ll need a mod to get your kicks. Now modder ‘Praydog’, who has developed a number of unofficial RE mods, says a new controller update is coming to both games soon which will bring full 6DOF support, which means you’ll soon be able to take on the universe’s myriad of wicked creatures mano a mano.

Praydog has released unofficial VR support for RE2, RE3, RE7 and RE Village (aka RE8), however neither of Capcom’s latest feature full motion controls.

According to Eurogamer’s Ian Higton, who went hands-on with the mod on both Resident Evil Village, the new motion control support lets you shoot, manage a shoulder holster-style inventory, block by holding your hands in front of your face, and heal yourself by pouring medicine on your hands—many of the things you’d consider smart features for even VR-native games.

Some scripted movements, like falling through a floor or placing a baby in a cradle, are decidedly less immersive, although they’re likely impossible to avoid since the game relies heavily on forced camera changes during specific action sequences. Check out some gameplay from Higton’s video below:

Higton says along with 6DOF support, the addition of the full body inverse kinematics (IK) models “ups the immersion dramatically and it makes some of the more hectic battles in Village feel nail-bitingly realistic.”

Village also looks absolutely incredible in VR. The highly detailed environments were a joy to explore and some of the distant views across the village at the mountain ranges beyond it legitimately took my breath away. One of the most impressive things about playing Resident Evil Village in VR though, is finally being able to understand the true scale of some of the enemies. Lady Dimitrescu in particular feels way more imposing in VR compared to in flat and it turns out I had completely underestimated how much she towered over her daughters.

The motion controller updates are slated to arrive at some point this month. You’ll find them over at Github for free, however Praydog also runs a Patreon for users who want to support their work.

Of course, there are some official VR versions out there if you want to get your bio-mutant-slaying fix. On Quest 2 you can play Resident Evil 4which was reworked from the ground-up by Armature Studio and Oculus to offer higher-res textures and VR-native touches of immersion. There’s also Resident Evil 7 on PSVR, although it admittedly doesn’t feature full body IK that Praydog’s PC VR mod does.

    Thanks, Preydog! You da man!

  • Andrew Jakobs

Saw it on beardo benjo’s youtube channel. This just shows what a bit of extra work can do to an already great game. Capcom should hire this bloke to add VR support to their new games from the start.

  • Max-Dmg

I wish this worked on non steam versions.

  • dextrovix

These mods are new to me, so thank you Road To VR to bringing it to my attention!

I’m feeling spoilt, LukeRoss and his amazing mod for Cyberpunk was well worth the Patreon pledge, and I can’t wait to try RE2 out myself in VR- I will have to make a contribution towards Praydog too!

  • Zack71

World is sinking but…now we can play RE in VR!

  • Nothing to see here

Looking at some of these VR mods, it begs the question: Why? Not why make the mods, which look awesome, but why are the mods even necessary? If one or more modders an independently create a VR version of a game, why aren’t game developers doing it themselves? Don’t they like money? Are their vaults full now?

    • Mr.Philgood

Because you can’t make money with it. VR is still a niche, especially PC VR. Making mods takes time, good mods even more. Investing that time into a flatscreen game makes way more sense if a studio wants to make money. Which game studio has made a profit of a PC VR game in the last two years?

      • mirak

Like they can’t even pay one guy to do a port ??

    • NL_VR

This is probably what Sony is planning when they talk about hybrid games for PSVR2

      • Ookami

Early VR ports soured me on the whole idea, but these recent mods show that a VR port is definitely doable–and, in fact, if a small team of hobbyists can achieve this much, how much more will full-time developers be able to do? The question is how much resources the studios will put into it.

  • Ookami

Are they updating the RE2/RE3 mods to include improved IK models? Last I saw they had horrible rubber-looking wrists anytime you turn your hands, but RE7’s models look really good.

    • Ben Jacobs

I tried RE2 today, didn’t experience any rubber wrists.

There are still a bunch of issues with the mod though so I’d strongly recommend holding off until it’s refined.

      • Ookami

        nice

  • Sounds amazing!

  • the vast majority

Tried the mod last night. Pretty awesome. The game looks great in Vr.

  • Art Sin

After all the hype, just spent over an hour with it and it’s one of the jankiest things i’ve ever attempted to play in VR. Controls are AWFUL – a million miles away from the sleek, intuitive controls of RE4VR on Q2. Also need a beast of a PC to get it to run decently. Even on my 3080 very laggy and sub-72fps with a lot of lag. Don’t waste your time.

    • NL_VR

Funny how people have different experience.
i havent played Villgare but Re2 Remake and some people said the same.
But i had no problems i found it to be a pretty good VR-version of a flatgame.
Re4 maybe runs smoother but it also based on a real old game.

  • Lulu Vi Britannia

FFS, it doesn’t work for me… It crashes on loading. The game works fine without the mod. Does anyone have an idea?

  • Rosko

Near perfect eh. So far every vr mod i tried has been awful with the usual hype by youtuber saying they are amazing. Doubt this will be any different.

    • antonio mora

      You have no idea

  • Lulu Vi Britannia

The mod crashes the game exactly six seconds after I open the game. Anyone got a similar bug? I updated my graphics driver yesterday, it worked, I managed to watch the cutscene at the beginning. But I didn’t have time to play anymore, so I closed the game. I intended to play this morning, but surprise, it doesn’t work anymore.

I’m getting real sick of computers. I keep getting unexplainable issues lately… Literally nothing changed between yesterday and this morning, there’s literally no reason for it to work yesterday and suddenly stop working today, Anyway, thanks to anyone who has any suggestion.

    • antonio mora

What HMD are you using, have you visited their discord page?

  • Max-Dmg

Don’t worry Capcom, the fans will do your work for you.

  • Max-Dmg

Any support for non steam versions?
