VRChat, the popular social VR platform, announced that flatscreen ports for both Android and iOS are currently in development.

The company says in a developer blog that while there’s still no release date on the books, the Android version has already been used by team members to attend large meetings.

Additionally, the Android version will support any world or avatar that works on Meta Quest, since the standalone also runs Android.

Here’s a quick look at an early build, which the studio stresses isn’t a final version:

VRChat on Android Mobile will only be available to VRChat Plus subscribers, the studio says, offering it as a beta to polish UI and UX before a full public launch. Beta access is expected to arrive to VRChat Plus members in three to four months. The full public launch on Google Play is expected in three to six months after the beta release, the studio says.

VRChat on iOS however is expected later, with more details to follow. The studio says it will be more complex, as content will need to be rebuilt for the iOS platform since it uses a different graphics framework.

The addition of iOS support is also slated to fracture VRChat worlds into three distinct supported platforms instead of the previous two, which for now includes PC and Quest. The studio maintains the situation is “[n]ot ideal”.

VRChat isn’t the first social VR app to offer flatscreen versions on mobile. Competitor Rec Room offers the widest network of supported devices, which in addition to VR support on Quest, PSVR and SteamVR headsets also includes flatscreen support for iOS, Android, Xbox, and PS4/PS5.

Meta’s own Horizon Worlds platform is also set to launch on non-Quest devices sometime soon, which will include both the Web and mobile versions.

Pancake users bring the wrong type of people onto an app named VR CHAT! You will notice it’s not 2D Chat or Flat Chat.

    • Ookami

I don’t see the problem of flatscreen players playing VRChat. It’s already supported and most players are still VR players, but more importantly it allows those without VR to not miss out on meet-ups with friends online.
And maybe my main point against your being against flatscreen players: many a player have picked up VR just because the tried VRChat and saw how fun it could be to be in VR. The added social element that comes with motion controls, as well as perhaps normalization by being surrounded by those using vr, are factors that bring players into VR
and more VR users can’t really be a bad thing. It’s one of the things we need most (more games is also important, but more players will lead to more games, as well as vice versa)

      • ViRGiN

more vrchat users prevents actual vr adoption as obviously those who get into vrchat, are EXTREMELY into it and never step out of their vrchat safety bubble. nearly no games ever allows you to fully customize your avatar with custom models; making entirety of non-vrchat absolutetly obsolete to these tailwigglers.

in other words – every hour spent in vrchat is an hour wasted for the entire ecosystem.

        • BananaBreadBoy

So basically…more people playing VRchat raises peoples expectations for the rest of VR? Odd criticism lmao.

        • Ookami

That literally makes no sense, but ok

        • Sibir Lupus

“in other words – every hour spent in vrchat is an hour wasted for the entire ecosystem.”

Actually no, this isn’t true at all. VRChat is actually one of the reasons VR retention is as high as it is.

          • ViRGiN

lol, the popularity and addiction of vrchat users is exactly the reason why quest 2 got a price increase – too many people exclusively spending time in vrchat and vrchat only. free app on top of that. that does not build an ecosystem.

          • Sibir Lupus

Weird, no article or info stated VRChat was the only reason for the Quest 2 price increase. Yes, people only using free apps on the headset was a contributing factor to the Quest 2 price increase but it wasn’t the “only” reason. Stop pulling fiction from out of thin air and stating it as fact.

          • ViRGiN

so you have data on vrchat user behaviours?

do you have to take every word literally?

your username screams absolute weebly/furr monstrosity. and a single quick google search points to a youtube channel with your username with a bunch of furry videos. that is some extremely embarassing shit and 100% belongs to you. you are hard trying to portray vrchat into something it really is not. vrchat is the tiktok of vr.

          • Sibir Lupus

You portray what you say as fact, so yes it has to be taken literally. As for your judgement about me; the content I’ve posted on Youtube isn’t embarrassing at all. That’s your opinion as is the label you’ve placed on me, and none of it really has nothing to do with this topic. Just remember the one of the internet rules: Once you start attacking someone personally, you’ve lost the discussion ;).

          • ViRGiN

i’m not attacking you – simply pointing out that you’re literally part of the problem. vrchat isn’t gaining masses of people – it’s gaining masses of degenerates and weirdos, and it’s not a stereotype, it’s a reality. and those extremely into vrchat are the loudest ones to deny that reality. enjoy your furry tails.

          • Sibir Lupus

So you think calling people you don’t know or understand “degenerates and weirdos” isn’t attacking them? You clearly don’t understand anything about VRChat’s userbase other then the narrowminded stereotypes you see on the internet. VRChat isn’t a problem for VR, and if anything is one of the reasons VR technology is moving forward the way it is. You deny seeing any of that because it doesn’t serve your opinionated narrative.

          • ViRGiN

how vrchat is moving vr forward? lol. you are insanely overaddicted to vrchat and fail to face reality, all because you immensly enjoy it.

what a classic. i clearly don’t understand, because YOU have a different experience. me, and everyone else who is absolutetly disgusted with what vrchat had to offer are OBVIOUSLY wrong.

          • Sibir Lupus

*Looks around* I don’t see anyone in here backing you up. And I’ve seen plenty of your comments on other articles on this site. No one agrees with anything you’ve had to say. So who is this “everyone else” then? ;)

          • ViRGiN

*tips fedora* i habent heard normal people being excited about vrchat for years. Vrchat is dying.

          • Cless

Damn man, what a dark world you live in. EVERYTHING is always or decaying or dying in your world view.

Even VR chat, a game that is quite old by game standards, still has a slowly growing userbase of daily users. You can check its daily numbers like you always like doing on steam. That’s far from a dying game my dude.

Just because you want it to die because of your weird ass opinions about, doesn’t make it true.

          • ViRGiN

According to you pcvr isnt dead as long as one person is still using it.

I don’t think we ever finished the conversation about when pcvr started. Pcvr exists for over 20 years now. It’s not really growing.

So is the vrchat getting more users, or pcvr?

Been months or years since i told you that valve don’t care about vr and still nothing has changed. Even highly praised vertigo 2 has laughable numbers.

          • Cless

            >>According to you PCVR isn’t dead as long as one person is still using it.

Not at all. Its just that when things are growing in numbers, is the literal opposite of dying. Even if they had stayed at the same number for the last 3 years it wouldn’t be dying either.

            >>I don’t think we ever finished the conversation about when pcvr started. Pcvr exists for over 20 years now. It’s not really growing.

We didn’t? Damn, we have so many threads going on sometimes that is hard to keep track at all.
I’d say in the last decade it has boomed compared to the 10 years before that. Problem is, people thought this was going to grow like phones did, and it just won’t. For now it seems to be growing at around the same rate as PC gaming did.

            >>So is the vrchat getting more users, or pcvr?

I’d say both. It could also can be that the % of total people playing VRChat is going down, but the actual number of people to be going up!

            >>Been months or years since i told you that valve don’t care about vr and still nothing has changed. Even highly praised vertigo 2 has laughable numbers.

Yeah, I think I agree with you on that partially. Valve works on ValveTime™, so who the hell knows when they will release something new. They are way more enthusiastic with their mobile PC atm though, that’s for sure.

I don’t know why, but I had Vertigo 2 on my wishlist, and… I have no idea how it got there lol I don’t think I ever heard about it until it came out. Haven’t bought it yet though, sooo many games to go through first.

(Btw, I don’t know if I mentioned this to you yet, check out the injector people are working on for UE4/5 games! I’m quite excited about that lately!)

          • ViRGiN

            > Even if they had stayed at the same number for the last 3 years it wouldn’t be dying either.
Platforms can be dead, despite ever growing user base. More people experienced Dreamcast way after it died; thanks to emulation and preservation.

            > I’d say in the last decade it has boomed compared
Oh, so now it boomed? I’m pretty sure you said before that pre-2012 it doesn’t really count. Of course it boomed cause it essentially didn’t exist in any shape or form that was believebly desired by customers.

            > For now it seems to be growing at around the same rate as PC gaming did.
PC gaming to this day grows a lot, lol. PCVR is absolutetly dead in comparison. Every day there are dozens of thousands gaming PCs sold and regularly used – it’s nothing like PCVR. Since over half of PCVR are using standalone Quest, accessing PCVR is a thing of curiosity – the numbers of concurrent users on VRLFG is 8189. That’s no different than 2-3 years ago lol.

            > check out the injector people are working on for UE4/5 games
I don’t think it was for UE5; but I am not interested in 3DTV gaming in VR. Very few titles have motion controls, and even then it has nothing to do with even DrBeef Quest ports; it’s just games being rendered in 3D with head tracking enabled. That was fun 10 years ago with VorpX and first attempts of running games in VR; i’m fully done with gamepad/m&k gaming. It’s not immersive anymore.

          • Cless

Sorry, I had a super busy week!

            >>Platforms can be dead, despite ever growing user base.
Technically true, but definitely not the case here. VRChat hasn’t racked millions in debt like SEGA did, and they aren’t dragging 2 failed projects on their backs weighting them down either.

            >>Of course it boomed cause it essentially didn’t exist in any shape or form that was believebly desired by customers.
Yes, that’s kind of my point.

            >>PC gaming to this day grows a lot, lol.
PC gaming at the start was being called dead by many people as consoles were vastly more popular and had way more games, while the PC market was fractured and small, so not so different. You are just thinking about a later period in PC gaming.

            >>I don’t think it was for UE5; but I am not interested in 3DTV gaming in VR

Nono, you are getting it totally wrong; it has nothing to do with that or what VorpX does. Its actual full VR with a small-ish (compared to VorpX) performance hit!

They are taking advantage that UE does support VR in its base engine to inject it into games that don’t have it (That is why only UE4 and 5 games work, UE3 and older didn’t have it before).
Definitely not perfect, and never will be, but a big step over flat TV, a step over what VorpX does. So for people that don’t mind tinkering a bit with their games, this will be absolutely awesome!

Of course, 0 motion control support unless someone actually makes a mod for it… but to be honest, fuck that, I don’t care much about “VR genre” stuff. I just want to play the games I play normally, the same way I always do, but immersed in VR.

          • ViRGiN

VorpX did support “proper” 3D rendering instead of faking stereo planes.
Even with proper 3D, it’s still a flat game experienced mainly by fake camera being controlled by the headset.

I want to play VR games. Injector offers zero of the proper VR experience outside of a handful of games that did add support for motion controllers – and even then, it’s more of a 3D mouse. There never will be proper holstering or gun koking.

Just like Alien Isolation mod. It rendered in VR, but had no controls. Great game, great atmosphere – but it didn’t make VR what VR is about. And even then, I played it around 2014/2015 with DK2. That was the glimpse into the future that still hasn’t arrived.

It does sound like 99% of injector/mod users are just highly dissatisfied PCVR elitists, who are tired of zero-offerings of native VR. These people are minority. Extreme minority. They are absolutetly disconnected from market reality. They enjoy these mods, cause native PCVR is simply nonexistent by now. How is this supposed to boost the market? Two GTA 5 VR mods did NOTHING for VR, and GTA is THE game that will provide market turnaround. Universal UE4 injector really means nothing to me, as even I struggle to name 5 games that I really want to play in VR. Most Unreal titles aren’t that interesting.

Injector users are hyper extrapolating their joy to the PCVR as a whole – the amount of times I was called troll and unable to afford PCVR by simply disliking those mods is insane.

          • Cless

Hey! Sorry it took me quite a while to get back at you, life got in the way and I also got quite sick :(

            >>VorpX did support “proper” 3D rendering instead of faking stereo planes.
Even with proper 3D, it’s still a flat game experienced mainly by fake camera being controlled by the headset.

Totally true! There are 3 modes for VorpX though.
–The flat fake stereo planes one that works on most games and its incredibly cheap to run performance wise.
–3D mode, that uses real buffer data to make the game actually 3D, but on a “window” in front of you. Pretty heavy on performance.
–VR mode, this is basically the last one, but like you said, making your head a “3D mouse”… I… never liked this one too much, it has “only” like a hundred or hundred fifty games compatible with it.

            >>I want to play VR games. Injector offers zero of the proper VR experience outside of a handful of games that did add support for motion controllers – and even then, it’s more of a 3D mouse. There never will be proper holstering or gun koking.

Yeah, that is correct as well, but hey, I will take this over playing on a regular monitor any day, especially with the higher resolution HMDs that are coming out lately, wouldn’t you?
I mean, making a regular flat game into a VR game would A, change the genre of the game you are playing and/or B, cost A LOT in development time and money.
That is why I would argue that an alternative C, which would be to just keep the same game but giving it a “VR camera” is a happy middle ground to make VR more enticing for everyone.

            >>It does sound like 99% of injector/mod users are just highly dissatisfied PCVR elitists, who are tired of zero-offerings of native VR. These people are minority. Extreme minority.

Yeah man! But that is modding for you, always a super small minority, but they enjoy themselves quite a lot! I disagree completely by calling elitist those people, maybe you meant enthusiasts?

            >>They are absolutetly disconnected from market reality.

This is where we disagree I think. The reason why its a minority is precisely because of; one, the technical knowhow that usually takes to mod games or alternatively, two, that people just can’t be bothered to do it.

My argument is, if this was an option in most PC games (which it could be eventually), and its basically easy as launching the game in VR mode, or something like that, then, a WHOLE LOT more people would want that and push the total VR user base up.

I think that is one of the things that Apple really seems to want to get right. If we could just put on a headset, and that headset right away connects to your computer, I think many more people would want to use PCVR. I… don’t see that happening anytime soon on Windows though :/

            >>Injector users are hyper extrapolating their joy to the PCVR as a whole

No need to extrapolate man, PC modding is right at the core of PC gaming since day 1. Its not extrapolating anything, its just one of the pros that PC have for enthusiasts over consoles or mobile VR HMDs.

What android devices well be compatible with vrchat ?

    • Sibir Lupus

I’ve heard most Android phones with at least 6GB or RAM will work. Android phones with “flagship” processors and more RAM will of course give you a better experience in VRChat.

  • BananaBreadBoy

Eugh, VRC already suffers from way too many kids on it, just like most multiplayer VR games. This is just turning the faucet into a firehose.
