‘Attack on Titan VR’ Releases in Early Access July 23rd, and It Looks… Rough

37

Japanese studio UNIVRS announced Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable in late 2022, making for the hit anime’s first official VR game. Now the studio says it’s releasing the game in early access on Quest next month, giving us our first look at gameplay. And it looks pretty rough.

The studio today announced that Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable is releasing on Quest in early access on July 23rd, priced at just $5.

While it’s difficult to argue with such an honest price tag, the new gameplay video is a pretty stark departure from the concept trailer released in June 2023, which admittedly features pre-rendered animations.

Of course, we’ll be reserving judgement until we actually get a chance to go hands-on with the game, although it’s undoubtedly not the strongest start.

As the first official Attack on Titan VR game, Unbreakable lets players enter the world of the hit anime to become a member of the Scout Regiment and fight against the Titans for the survival of mankind. That means plenty of swinging through the city with your omni-directional mobility gear, and bringing down hulking Titans with your trusty blades.

The early access version is set to include the first two chapters of the game, each offering 2-3 hours of action, the studio says. It’s also set offer both single and two-player co-op, however the studio notes co-op mode will be under development until the full 1.0 release, which is slated to arrive in Late 2024.

In the meantime, you can wishlist Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable, which supports Quest 2/3/Pro.

  • Vr developer

As a VR developer, I can predict the negative comments of psvr fanboys: "these horrible mobile graphics" but I can assure you that this does not represent 1% of the power of these headsets, I am really chocked by the lack of quality that I have just seen, seriously, this title could make a lot of money, what happened, did you give the project to a Kid 4 years old? It doesn't make sense, i cant believe, with all respect to my colleagues, but this is unacceptable to the VR community..

    • ViRGiN

Usually the psvr fanboys don't see problem with upscaled quest ports, because for them "it's still better than your mobile phone Quest".

    • LP

As a VR developer I don't agree that this uses 1% of the mobile headset. Considering that the game will be for quest 2, you need to draw 72 frames (36 with frame generation) for each eye, which is a huge load on the XP2 mobile chip. Large-scale world that was in the trailer is quiet good.
Actually, because of these mobile restrictions, we still cannot see open-world projects.

Regarding PSVR. Sony stopped production and released a PC kit, this is enough not to be a fanboy.

I’m sure there were a lot of things that could have been visually improved, but this is a mobile headset and it can’t compare with PC builds for VR.

      • ViRGiN

Large-scale world that was in the trailer is quiet good.

        That is laughable.

There is nothing impressive about this game at all, there is no technical achievements either.

        • LP

          >nothing impressive about this game at all, there is no technical achievements either
Should there be? Your expectations unrealistic.
This is a game for AOT fans ,not a tech demo for limited mobile hardware.

          >That is laughable.
Laughable for players but for developers it's a headache and hours of work.
It's a pity that you devalue people's work.

          • ViRGiN

Oh fak off you toxic fak.
Everything ever made was done by someone putting in the time. You’re pathethic.

          • LP

Well. Now I'm not so surprised by this kind of attitude towards people from you.
Your cultural level is at the same level as your understanding of the industry.
It’s strange to hear about toxicity from a person who spews bile.

          • ViRGiN

Your understanding of industry is below zero. You claim to be VR Developer, yet blindly defeat this garbage. This isn’t 2016 VR era. And Quest has pulled off several magnitutes more of actual achievements. Have a look at Contractors Showdown, a 60 player battle royale online, with a 4km2 open world map. THIS IS OPEN WORLD. Not this Attack on Titan garbage that looks like assembled from 10 asset pieces.

          • LP

You know how people usually call the logic that something shouldn't exist because there are better ones? Where do you think you belong in your head-built world with your inability to communicate with strangers, low vocabulary, and constant rudeness?
Think about that instead of trying to compete in counterproductive criticism of a game that hasn't come out yet.

          • ViRGiN

I never said that it shouldn’t exist. But what this studio is showing is straight up embarassing in mid 2024. This could have fly in 2019 on Quest 1.
We’ll see how successful they will be with their product that straight up look offensive.

          • VR Developer

I imagine you're involved in the game's production since you felt so offended. I understand that receiving negative feedback can hurt deeply, but it's part of our job as developers to listen quietly and strive to improve. It took me years to learn this. I hope you understand that people don't speak out of malice, but as a developer, you have to be prepared for negative feedback. If we don't please, we should always look for the reasons in our work, not in the audience.

          • LP

            >I imagine you're involved in the game's production
I'm not surprised at such conclusions. Akin to your analyze ability.
By the way, it's been four days, how the development of a better version goes?

          • Null N’ Void

Well, I think it'd be disrespectful to the developers out there doing better, for free and with much less resources, to give this an absolute pass because "It was hard to make and for the fans".

          • NL_VR

It's the players right to do.
just because devs puts hours of work in it players shouldn't accept crap and buy anything it doesnt help gaming development or the VR industry at all.
it's not up to the players to know and accept games for what it is "just because" it's up to the developers to do good games

      • Vr developer

Bro, did you know Contractors showdown? I literally can make this AOT game in 10 days, i am not joking, i can do better in 10 days..

        • LP

Why not? You still have time before the release to show what you are capable of, if this is not trashtalk.
It’s even good when someone shows how to make it cooler.

As for Contractors showdown, there are no shadows (except for baked shadows), which speeds up rendering. And of course it is strange why they added them to AOT. Also I did not see transparent objects like glass in buildings.
I understand where the frame budget goes and I see that in both cases the quest works at the limit, so I do not agree with 1% of the helmet capabilities but I agree that it is possible to do better, much better.
It's also funny when they compare it to Asgard Wraith 2 which have all Meta's resources and just a corridor-arena levelling design with every angle is thought out so as not to render unnecessary. This is not an open world.
Population ONE, Ghost of Tabor and Constractos Showdown is better example to compare.
It is worth reminding people with bad memory that Zuckerberg promised GTA SA as a system seller but something went wrong? That something is the standalone HMD limited hardware.

          • Null N’ Void

Just saying, there's already a free Attack on Titan game that looks way better and plays Way better than this from the seems of it.

          • LP

            >plays Way better than this
            Play where? On YouTube?
You're blaming a game that hasn't even come out yet. Sheesh.

      • Peter vasseur

If you’re a vr dev, did Sony tell
        you yourself that they stopped
Production? Or are you just like the rest of the low info gamers and believe was meta fanboys write in opinion piece articles.

      • Arno van Wingerde

Try AC: Nexus: fairly open world with about 100x the graphics quality. If a group of kids got together and produced this I would be impressed, but if it is meant as a serious studio production: nope. Sure, you cannot render graphics realistically, but the "wallpaper textures" in AW2 show how much can be achieve in a semi open world if you actually try to make a decent project.
This looks like something that a group of people, a rainy day and a few crates of beer would produce…

        • LP

If this game wasn't Ubisoft product, it just wouldn't be allowed into Meta Store because of 40fps.

          • Mateusz Jakubczyk

What nonsense, there are many games on the Meta Store that use AppSW and didn't have to be a Ubisoft product…

          • LP

Yes, but following whataboutism's logic from the comments you can compare it to Asgard wraith 2 fps and say it uses 50% of peformance and have visual artifacts with input latency due to frame generation.

Any game on Oculus Quest has downsides, even the most expensive and largest ones. That's what I'm talking about when I mention the mobile chip and the compromises developers make.
Instead of being happy that something is coming out and not buying it if you don't like it, people try to spew their hate and cancel a game that doesn't meet their expectations. It's wild, to me.

  • Cl

I don't think it looks THAT bad. The animation when you cut the titans could be better. Maybe you don't like the cell shaded graphics? Of course I'd have to actually play it to see if it's janky

  • Ahi

I don't know why a game like this can expect to make sales. This is ashame for vr!!!!

  • NL_VR

    It just looks flat.
and if someone says this is what mobile chipset can do, look at asgards wrath 2 and realise how wrong you are

  • Paul Bellino

NO NO NO NO you could not give this game to me for free

    • ViRGiN

You would love it if it was PCVR SteamVR exclusive.

  • Peter vasseur

Why are the titans naked, with no junk. This game looks stupid. The Graphics are horrible. I’ll take me “dead psvr2” over this meta game Garbage any day.

  • FullMetal3000

    Most vr games suck

  • Paul Bellino

It looks Terrible. Who in their right mind would buy this…

  • Paul Bellino

maybe just maybe if it had more blood and gore and the environment were destructible but as is the way I see it. No way Jose

  • gothicvillas

    Absoute garbage

  • Peter vasseur

    Rough is an understatement.

  • NL_VR

    Wdym

  • NL_VR

You talked earlier about it was hardware limitations.

  • LP

When you get caught lying it's not hate.
You said you'd do better in 10 days and now you're backing away mumbling about your project.
It shows how you know the industry, time management and what your word is worth.
