forte vfx1 head mounted display history of virtual reality

I just stumbled across this excellent video showing a brief history of virtual reality. The video is from the YouTube channel Silicon Classics. It focuses mainly on the Forte VFX1 head mounted display but also gives a great overview of many other products surrounding its release. Real modern footage of the Forte VFX1 in action shows just how far we’ve come since the 1990s virtual reality bubble.

  • Those ’90s graphics sure are sentimental! Very interesting video, to see some history in the field, but it also makes me wonder how successful the Rift will be. Lets hope it will be easy enough to set up and cheap enough for the user base to grow large.

Also, we sure are blessed with extreme amounts of processing capability nowadays, compared to just 15 years ago.

No doubt in my mind that Rift CV1 will be a hit if they can stick to that goal of a $200 price tag. That’s right in the pocket to qualify as every 10-year-old boy’s Christmas miracle. But that’ll be 2016 because I think there’s a fat chance they’ll deploy in time for the 2015 holiday frenzy.
