Six game industry artists converged on NVIDIA’s booth at PAX Prime 2015 recently to take part in an art contest using Google’s VR painting program, Tilt Brush. You could win a NVIDIA’s flagship VR-ready GPU, the GTX 980 Ti, just by voting for your favorite.

Six game industry artists came to participate in the Tilt Brush competition using the HTC Vive, which included Mike Krahulik from Penny Arcade, Chandana Ekanayake from Uber Entertainment, Lee Petty from Double Fine Productions, Michael Shilliday from Whiterend Creative, Sarah Northway from Northway Games, and Tristan Reidford from Valve.

Each artist only had 30 minutes to complete their creations using the Steam VR hand controllers.

Fruit “Pollinator”

‘Fruit Pollinator’ is a creation by Penny Arcade’s Mike Krahulik. If you’re a fan of the the webcomic, you might recognize that little guy as the fruit-loving ‘Fruit F*cker 2000’.

In the Mouth of Madness

Lee Petty from Double Fine Productions remarked after the competition that he had “lost about 15 minutes in [his] brain,” from the level of immersion he experienced.

Parakeets

Tristan Reidford from Valve said “it’s very active. I guess it’s a lot like how old-school sculpture would be—running around looking at all different sides. It’s like a fun challenge…”

Cyberpunk Robot

Michael Shilliday from Whiterend Creative maintains that working with CAD software is “almost all hand, wrist and shoulder movement—[Tilt Brush on HTC Vive] takes your entire body, as well as your surrounding awareness.”

Psychedelic Totoro

Chandana Ekanayake, game director of Uber Entertainment’s upcoming VR title Wayward Sky, maintains that Tilt Brush is “one of the best things that [he] like[s] to show off to people that never tried VR,” and describes it “more like sculpting in space than painting.”

Space Dragon

Sarah Northway from Northway Games likes that Tilt Brush “it’s not just about the picture itself, it’s like the whole process of drawing it feels like a bit of a dance.”
