A new Batman experience is on its way exclusively to PlayStation VR, as announced on stage at Sony’s pre-E3 PlayStation event, it’s called Batman: Arkham VR and it’s developed by franchise veterans Rocksteady Studios.

At Sony’s pre-E3 PlayStation event, the company was flexing its VR content muscles with some heavy hitting, big name franchises announced to be coming to PlayStation VR. One of the biggest was a tease for a new Batman title from developers Rocksteady, simply called Batman: Arkham VR.

Asking you to delve “deep into an all-new Batman: Arkham mystery”, the new title apparently asks you to “think like Batman and utilize his legendary gadgets to unravel a plot that threatens the lives of his closest allies.”

“Virtual reality is expanding the video game space and entertainment overall, so it is extremely exciting to have our incredible team at Rocksteady Studios dive into this new storytelling medium with the Batman Arkham franchise,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  “Rocksteady is one of the best at creating story-driven content, and Batman: Arkham VR will deliver a more immersive experience than anyone could have imagined only a few years ago.”

Rocksteady Studios Game Director Sefton Hill says “Rocksteady is always looking for new ways to further engross players into the worlds we create and Batman: Arkham VR is an example of how we’re taking advantage of the latest technology to do that. The team is committed to delivering a Batman experience that stays true to the character and allows players to fully immerse themselves in the role of the World’s Greatest Detective”

Based in the UK, Paul has been immersed in interactive entertainment for the best part of 27 years and has followed advances in gaming with a passionate fervour. His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Paul joined forces with Ben to help build the new Road to VR in preparation for what he sees as VR’s coming of age over the next few years.

Despite me wishing the trailer actually showed us even a single glimpse of the game interface, I’ll give this teaser 10 out of 10 for style. It’s solid marketing to emphasise an explicit analogue between the mask Batman wears and the HMD the player will be wearing.
