‘The Wizards’ Spellcasting Combat Game Launches in Early Access Friday – Launch Trailer

The Wizards is a single-player spellcasting combat game from Carbon Studio, the makers of Alice VR. The game is set to launch in Early Access on Steam for the Vive and Rift this Friday, July 28th. A new Early Access launch trailer shows what’s in store for aspiring spellcasters.

The Wizards is a VR spellcasting game where players will use their VR controllers to cast fireballs, lightning, magical shields, and more, to defeat a range of enemies in a classic medieval fantasy setting. Though what we’ve seen so far has us worried the game could fall too far into the monotonous ‘wave shooter’ camp, developer Carbon Studio says The Wizards built around a “story mode featuring time travel and heroic battles,” and “element-based spell trees to learn and develop,” which gives us some hope that it will be more substantive than simply dispatching wave after wave of goblins and demons.

Built on Unreal Engine 4, the game’s visuals stand out, while the art direction and gameplay revealed thus far remind us heavily of The Unspoken (2016), a PVP spellcasting combat game from Insomniac Games.

Carbon Studio’s previous game, Alice VR (2016), wasn’t particularly well received. The studio explains why, this time around, they’re taking The Wizards to Early Access:

We’ve learnt that when developing VR games, you have to gather feedback from the players as soon as possible. We want to make sure that all the solutions and features we provide are fun to play, add to the immersion and meet the players’ expectations. We’re also open to players’ ideas and suggestions for future content updates.

Carbon Studio expects The Wizards to be in Early Access for 5 – 6 months, with a full release of the game to follow, including new regions, an “endless” arcade mode, more powerfull spell upgrades in the form of “Master Enhancements”, and new “Fate Cards” that modify the game experience. “We also want to implement content based on players’ ideas, be it new spells, new enemies, new challenges etc,” the studio writes on the game’s Steam page.

  • This looks like something I would enjoy playing, I hope it comes to PSVR.

    • ShiftyInc

It’s a room-scale game, so doubtful it will come to PSVR. unless they change the game to play in a seated position.

      • Room scale isn’t a factor that can be changed also you don’t need to be seated to play PSVR plenty of games are played standing up.

        • ShiftyInc

They can remove the room-scale requirement. however i lose tracking plenty of times when standing with PSVR games. Could be my setup of course. but the box also says it should be enjoyed seated.

But either way, seeing their other game is not on PSVR i would not hold my breath on this one for the time be.

          • I know a lot of PC VR people always say cant be done or little chance but the number of PSVRs out there is to attractive for VR developers. It probably has a better chance of coming than you think.

Hi guys, Paul from Carbon Studio here. The game can be played in standing position without roomscale-ready space around the player. We are working on PSVR port of the game. It’s still too early to promise anything, but we hope we’ll manage to release The Wizards on PSVR. The space around the players that can be tracked on PSVR is of course much smaller than on Vive and Rift, but nothing is impossible. Think about (definitely playable) PSVR port of Superhot :)

          • Thats awesome news, thank you.

          • gamechanger

Glad to hear that, thanks! :)

Would love to play this on PSVR!

        • victor

Playing standing up not same as room-scale.

I wish they would show our virtual arms too along with our hands! Floating hands are so immersion breaking!

    • Get Schwifty!

      I know right…

  • Sam Illingworth

This looks pretty cool, though the fireballs look a bit weedy!

What I’d really like is a Harry Potter VR game, where you have to get the motion of your wands and pronunciation of spells just right. I think that would feel amazing when you get good at it!

Hmm, the mechanics look like a copy of “The Unspoken”, which is not bad. But that the enemies don’t cast shadows is a little immersion breaker and it smells like teleport locomotion… :( I hope I’m wrong with that guess.
