‘Alvo’ Wants to Be ‘CS:GO’ for VR, Launching with Cross-play for PSVR, Rift & Vive in 2018

Indie studio Mardonpol, makers of Quiz Night Tonight! (2017), is dialing in on CS:GO territory with its recently released trailer which shows all of the trappings of the popular PC shooter, replete with Italy-inspired map, AWPs, and bomb planting galore. The game is slated for a 2018 with its release targeting cross-play for PSVR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Alvo first appeared on Sony’s list of 60+ upcoming games in 2017 and 2018 back in October, but we weren’t all that sure exactly what it was, or whether it was a PSVR exclusive or not. Now, Mardonpol says they’re not only making it for PSVR with Aim support, but also for Vive and Rift too.

Here’s a quick rundown of what the game is promising:

  • Search and Destroy – a 5v5 round-based game mode, where one team attempts to plant the bomb and the other must defend the sites and/or defuse the bomb.
  • Deathmatch – you versus everyone. Last man standing wins.
  • King of the Hill – a game mode based on capturing control spots all over the map, and holding them. The team with the most amount of points at the time limit will win.
  • Online bots – in the case aren’t enough users online

Since it’s likely early days for the studio, further info on the game is still sparse. You can sign up for beta access here. Check out the Steam page here.

It’s safe to say the trailer below doesn’t include actual in-game footage, but it certainly raises an eyebrow.

Trailer doesn’t show much, but there’s room in the VR shooter market, Onward Pavlov and BAM are three leaders.

Though I can’t wait for a major player like CoD or Battlefield to make the move into VR

    • NooYawker

I can’t wait for Counter Strike to release a VR version. Why get something that wants to be like CS when you can get CS

      • dogtato

crossplay with the regular game? it’s fun to imagine how salty everyone would get when they lose to someone with different hardware. I guess you can get that fun with just different VR hardware

        • Andrew Jakobs

Well, on PC it’s common to have different hardware..

      • Raphael

You will have a long wait flappy. Gabe doesn’t really make games anymore. He said he’s working on 3 VR games but the dev team consists of two people and one of them hasn’t shown up for work in 6 months leaving chuck to struggle on his own.

      • Andrew Jakobs

Yeah, would love to see a CS:GO officially supporting VR (as unofficially you can use Vorpx).

    • Jason Mercieca

Oh battlefield 1 in VR, well i guess i would only play battlefield all the time :))

  • Enbee

I’m a big fan of that cross platform banner before the article.

  • Joel Cullum

Vive and teleport locomotion lends itself best to a Brothers in Arms game. It’s mostly moving your squad around the battlefield and moving yourself into cover. VR isn’t up to run and gun style gameplay yet.

    • Andrew McEvoy

Except of course for Pavlov and Onward working perfectly well as run and gun full locomotion VR games. Other than that yeah totally.

    • Jason Mercieca

This (and all) kind of game should have free locomotion like Onward, teleport locomotion will kill this game..
What devs should do is the obvious: account for all clients, implement several locomotion systems so everyone is cared for, and in fps games free locomotion is a must.

      • Andrew McEvoy

Agreed. Just give us all the options. Everyone’s happy and we can all move on.

      • Agreed. I came up with a solution awhile back for an FPS where the character you choose to play has a specific input to control them. e.g. a robot has a grapple, a human has full movement control, a futuristic character has teleport etc.

This way when people are playing they can see what the other player has and use that in their strategy. e.g. teleportation is known to be more fiddly than free movement so that character could be balanced with a feature that lets them teleport back to the previous position with a single click.

This would allow a more competitive FPS gameplay so input systems are not the deciding factor in multi-player games.

        • Jason Mercieca

Yes thats a good idea, as for me as long as devs accounts for all of us (teleport & free movement) all is ok.
It is a mystery to me that some games had only teleport locomotion and on most cases if not all lots of vr players complaint (with all the right & logic) that they hate teleport locomotion system and they wont buy any games that does not offer the option for free movement, then in 95% of cases the devs on future patches applied the option for free movement as well as leaving the teleport system, like that they did 2 good things, they respected all clients and by doing that they sold more copies, so its a win win situation for devs & clients, that some devs dont see this issue like it really is will be a mystery to me, don’t they want to keep happy and sell to all tastes of clients, if i was the seller i can say clearly i want to maximise my sales from my hard job of creating my game, so where is there logic ???

  • Andrew Jakobs

There does seem to be a few shots in there which seem to be ingame footage.

  • Max Cheung

    good luck dealing with sony

    • Alexisms

Sparc has cross platform play. It’s only when the Xbox is mentioned that Sony says no.

    • gothicvillas

there are lots of games with cross play between Sony PS and PC

  • Jerald Doerr

Umm am I missing something?? This game looks like a blatant rip off of CS … I’m predicting lawsuit…

Not a chance. CS GO itself is so derivative that it’d never stick.
