HTC today started selling the long-awaited Vive Pro headset and SteamVR 2.0 base station hardware bundle, making it the first instance of the 2.0 tracking hardware coming to market. The new hardware bundle, which includes the Vive Pro headset, two 2.0 SteamVR tracking base stations and two of the ‘pro blue’ controllers, costs $1400 USD.

Update (04/23/18 – 2PM ET): HTC Vive Pro Bundle availability is now hitting Western markets. You can find it on Amazon for $1400. The listing currently says the bundle will ship “within 3 to 5 weeks.”

The headline has been altered to reflect this. You can read the original article below, which details the bundle’s availability in Japan which HTC announced earlier today.

Original article: According to an official HTC press release (Japanese), the suggested retail price is ¥162,880 yen (~$1500), an amount that the company specifically says doesn’t include local taxes

The new hardware bundle includes the Vive Pro headset, two 2.0 SteamVR tracking base stations and two of the ‘pro blue’ controllers. Residents of Japan can purchase the headset direct from HTC, in stores, and through online vendors such as Yodobashi, one of the leading electronics retailers in Japan. Currently Yodobashi lists the package at ¥175,910 (~1620), an ammount that does includes local Japanese taxes.

SteamVR 2.0 base stations are what Valve desciribed at its unveiling as “smaller, more reliable, and offer improved performance,” including a larger tracking volume at 10 × 10 meters. The 2.0 base stations aren’t compatible with existing HTC Vives since they use a different method for sync timing.

HTC says they’re planning to sell the 2.0 base station separately as well, although there’s no specific pricing available yet.

The company launched HTC Vive Pro without base stations and controllers earlier this month for $800. Things got a little awkward though when the company then announced it would be shipping a 1.0 base station and controller bundle for an extra $300—a move that was likely related to the backlash the company received when they first announced Vive Pro’s steep price tag.

The headset is commonly thought of as a 1.5 version of the Vive Headset, and not a proper second generation offering despite its support for SteamVR 2.0 tracking. With its dual 1400 x 1600 OLED displays (total resolution 2800 x 1600), the headset boasts 615 ppi and a 78 percent increase resolution over the original Vive. Check out our review of Vive Pro if you want a deep dive.

It’s uncertain when other markets will get the 2.0 tracking bundle. Japan has a thriving  out-of-home VR arcade market, which could be the reason the company launched the bundle there first, although this is simply conjecture at this point. What’s interesting to note is the pre-tax price of the bundle is almost exactly $1500 at the time of this writing, which clearly lends credence to the global price being $1500 as well. (see update above)

We’ll keep our eyes peeled for global availability and update as soon as they launch in Western markets.

    $1400 according to Amazon US – https://www.amazon.com/HTC-VIVE-Virtual-Reality-System-PC/dp/B07B9WPR7G/?th=1 – Ships in 3 to 5 weeks.

    • Duane Aakre

The Amazon listing says it can handle a 20′ by 20′ area. I guess that means you need two additional base stations to get up to the 30′ by 30′ area previously mentioned.

But even 20′ by 20′ seems unusable until the wireless option becomes available unless they are going to release an extension cable to go between the 15′ proprietary cable and the link box.

      • Sardine

What, you got a problem with carrying a 15′ 10lb coil of wires on your head soyboy?

        • Jerald Doerr

Naaa! Come on bro… He just wants to play Sprint Vector in 1 to 1 room scale mode!

  • Graham J ⭐️

Don’t you mean HTC Vive “Pro”?

    • NooYawker

I hope you are an actual employee at Pimax, otherwise that’s sad.

      • Graham J ⭐️

What does Pimax have to do with this? The author is putting quotes around the names of products he dislikes (including Pimax and WMR) and not around this. I’m just point out the inconsistency.

The WMR platform includes Hololens so it is mixed. The 8k does have ~8k pixels across both panels. A stretch but at least it comes from somewhere. There is nothing pro about the Vive Pro. It’s meaningless.

And I’m a Vive user btw.

    • Lucidfeuer

      Ahaha, I actually laughed.

      • Graham J ⭐️

        :)

  • VRfrenzy

So, with the Amazon US listing, it would appear that it will cost $1500 after tax (7% in the lower parts of the country). I’m just kind of laughing right now. I’m interested to see what will happen in May. There are big annoucements from f8 (Facebook) and Google about VR. Also, it would appear that the Pimax (even with delays) may be finally sending out their prototype V6 to testers to determine if it is consumer release ready. At the moment the Samsung Odyssey is catching on as a prime option compared to the HTC Vive Pro with comparable resolution per eye. Despite the inherent issues with inside out tracking that will need to be addressed in future revisions, the Samsung is quite appealing and exceedingly more popular, esp with the recent price drop to $399 for the bundle with controllers.

Seeing the life-span and marketing from major VR competitors, it seems they don’t want to do yearly revisions. Seeing that HTC just priced themselves high comparatively to other HMDs they may miss out on the significant amount of possible gross sell figures they could have from a necessity (want) for v1.5 or v2 HMDs. If Facebook/Google/Pimax deliever on their promises for major upgrades or at least a comparable v1.5 set for reasonable pricing, HTC will be forced. We’ve come a long way since the Rift Kickstarter. Not nearly as many people are going to just automatically upgrade as an early tester until they hear what the competition has to say about it.

    • NooYawker

Why wait until May? Wait until 2019 or 2020.
While I think the pricing is exorbitant, comparing it to something may or may not be announced and the “8k” Pimax that is delayed yet again is stupid.
And the Samsung with shitty tracking is again, not a real comparison.
Why do people insist on comparing actual products with non-existent one or inferior ones because they’re lower priced?
From the beginning they said this is an enterprise product.

      • Jerald Doerr

Bud… It’s 3 times the price… Comparing is what we do… It’s completely !!!!!moronic!!!!! not do so.. Just because her tits are big don’t mean she’s enterprise! She asks for to much money no one will want her… She leaves a sower taste in your mouth I doubt you’ll be going back…
Dude, it pimp law 101! You don’t need a Business Degree to understand it.

        • NooYawker

Pimp law. Lots of cheap ho’s but if you want the top of the line you have to pay.
Samsung looks nice but has crap tracking so what’s the point of that?

          • Jerald Doerr

Yeah well save that money hustler, Cuz the gen 2 has to have more hardware than the Pro Ho so you can expect the same price or more if this Lil ho don’t put them out the game!
Pimp out on this, word is there’s a new Lil ho with a so-called sweet big old Pie too the Max… She starting to look mighty tasty and if she plays her cards right she might just dominate the block and be sitting on my face buy the end of the year.

          • NooYawker

I think we took it too far lol.

          • Jerald Doerr

All in good fun… much better than fighting and trying to put down each other! Have a good day brother!

          • Laurence Nairne

Unless you’re female, then you remembered this is still a boys club.

          • Jerald Doerr

            Oh please….

          • ummm…

yeah i wont spend again until gen 2. this is starting to feel like people lining up to buy the next overpriced smartphone. these days smartphones haven’t gotten so good that companies are finding it hard to get people to reup every year. the ROI on these HMDs are dubious. my vive is still more than enough, and id like some AAA development before anything else. I, like you, will be waiting for a gen 2 offering. what am i missing out on anyhow? really? what am i missing out on?

          • Get Schwifty!

Well, as I have said before this IS after all HTC…. where do you think they learned it?

      • VRfrenzy

This sounds like a slightly ignorant comment from someone who actually hasn’t tried the Samsung set. The tracking issues are blown way out of proportion. With the Windows updates and better support the loss of tracking with the inside out of WMR sets it’s not a big deal. When you are talking hundreds less for almost the same thing then yes, you can certainly compare. This isn’t some cheap vaporware from a Chinese knockoff. The controllers are decent compared to rifts and the feel is solid and high quality. How about you use the product before trolling a VR review site.

        • NooYawker

Ok so you’re still paying less for what’s still an interior product. Or are you saying the tracking is as good as a vive or oculus?
If people want to say. I’m not paying a premium price for this is one thing. Because I wouldnt. But to say the others are just as good is not being honest. The others give you a good experience at a low price. But the Vive Pro gives you the best experience possible right now. Whether it’s worth it or not, you can debate.

          • wcalderini

Actually own them both. (And the original Vive). Would LOVE for Odyssey to be better as it would be better for VR in general. It just isn’t. The tracking is “Spotty”. If it’s your first HMD, you may be fine because you really don’t know what you are missing. But using both, I really can’t stand to use the Samsung. It DOES lose tracking when the sensors cannot see it. If you are used to the Vive or the Rift, you kind of get used to your arms and hands being able to go wherever you want them to. With the Odyssey, I am ALWAYS conscious of tracking loss. Certain Areas above the head, to the side, below the knee, is just very offputting and immersion breaking. And the end of the day, Inside/out may very well be the way to go, but it just needs a better implementation.

          • NooYawker

I would buy the odessy to sit in my living and play casual games and watch movies.

          • GunnyNinja

Each HMD has a different advantage. Odyssey will end up being the goto for racing, flying and space sims and games where you use some other peripheral. Then hand tracking wont matter.

  • IGNITE VR
  • Adrian Meredith

Valve also specifically mentioned that the steam 2.0 was significantly cheaper to manufacture and would help push the drive for high end VR in the mainsteam…

    HTC hold my beer….

    • Andrew Jakobs

Yes, that’s what’s strange, so the 2.0 base stations with 2 controllers cost about $600 even though they should be cheaper to produce… that’s something that makes no sense.. I guess the price has something to do with availability, as they need to ramp up the productionprocess or availability of the components.

    • NooYawker

Cheaper to produce but HTC saw it as an opportunity to get a bigger margin.

    • dk

yes cheaper to make will help htc :P

    • Doctor Bambi

HTC: hold my beer…. *punches Valve straight in the face*

  • Get Schwifty!

If they had at least gotten to the point of including the upcoming “Knuckles” Valve controllers…. this might have made sense…

    • dogtato

Yeah I don’t see the point of 2.0 if you still just have two lighthouses and the same controllers. I’ll probably keep using 1.0 hardware with my Vive pro until I can buy better controllers and the price is better to get 3-4 new lighthouses instead of just 2.

    • Jerald Doerr

Im guessing the high price is to pay for all the extra customer support staff they have now hired to handle warranty issues…. Not…

      • Get Schwifty!

        lol

    • NooYawker

Make more sense but still only for those that gotta have everything.

  • mellott124

Annoying. So everyone who bought the Pro HMD can’t get the wands and base stations until later?

  • Jarom Madsen

At this point the HTC Vive is to VR what Wacom Cintiq’s are to graphic tablets: clearly the best while also very overpriced

    • VRfrenzy

That would be correct if we had others to compare it too. Must wait for that. But even the Samsung Odyssey is on par with the Vive Pro with regards to image quality. The Vive takes it with dedicated tracking solutions but for seated desktop gaming they are about the same so Samsung inches out with timing on that front.

    • johngrimoldy

I love (and agree with) your comparison.

    • Lucidfeuer

That’s a crap comparision, but well tried.

      • Jarom Madsen

        Dang, you got me

    • GunnyNinja

      “clearly the best”? Why?

      • Jarom Madsen

Probably a bit presumptuous of me to say that but then so is the statement concerning Cintiq tablets. The tracking on HTC Vive is still the most precise and scaleable solution while lacking in other areas.

        • GunnyNinja

The tracking technology is better but the performance difference is negligible. That alone will not help the Vive deficiencies. Rift just did a better job of giving you a complete package for less money. I have to charge my Vive wands every night. I haven’t had to change my Rift batteries(rechargeable) in over a week. Things like that matter. HTC just keeps charging. And I mean money this time…

    • Suitch

Clearly the most expensive, but far from clearly the best. I have a Vive and a Rift and the Rift blows the other out of the water. Content, comfort, and immersion. Touch controllers are worth far more to VR than the small resolution bump the Pro offers.

  • Jambo

In the next update, the Vive is going to release the amazing 3.0 base stations capable of 100 ft. x 100 ft. and STILL not release their wireless solution.

    • Pablo C

      Or knuckles

      • Get Schwifty!

Yes – it is utterly laughable to me that Oculus got grief for taking time to release their controllers, and even NOW HTC still has not gotten something of their own better than the clunky wands…. and mysteriously Valve’s controllers are nowhere to be seen… strange market.

        • ummm…

oh settle down. no need to try and take potshots at the leading roomscale solution to try to plug the rift. just sit in your chair and swivel ;) ….we will get the knuckles. im not hurting for new controllers. what we all may want is some more program development – and im sure you would agree with that even with your precious oculus store. so sit back and wait for a true 2.0 from both companies. until then just enjoy what you’ve got.

          • Get Schwifty!

I have both FWIW, the point being is it’s not a potshot… it’s a fair criticism, room scale tracking efficacy or not. Blind devotion to any platform is a problem. It is quite honestly absurd that HTC has had literally 3+ years with this solution and still refuses to make a more advanced controller and it appears its down to Valve to do so…. that points to some failures within HTC.

Telling me to “settle down” is a way of marginalizing the point… as if it’s unwarranted criticism when in fact it’s very warranted and a clear failure on HTC’s part to continue innovating on VR beyond just buffing up the room scale and resolution.

          • ummm…

Well I hear that criticism. However, this appears to be some sort of partnership that does not match a “traditional” agreement. Facebook aquired a small company that was running on enthusiasm and the community, and eventually just rolls it into Facebook and choos off it’s head. They are a company that just bought RD.

Htc vice and valve is a different realtionshiop. Both massive in their own right, or at least both having a visible market share in a few regions. Vavle wants to do RD. Their non budget minded approach breeds he creativity and the steam platform , and software properties help support some of that. They make a deal with a hardware company to work together and leverage large scale manufacturing and distribution/marketing etc. Structure. We see what happened with steam machines. They didn’t gain traction altho I shouldn’t assume how those were funded or who manufactured. Anyhow with that being said, who thought htc was behind the innovation? Sure they may have been integral in many of the efforts and successes that is part of the DNA of the vive, but how much do we realistically apportion to then? I don’t know you tell me. Valve was never small enough to just be eaten by htc. They both have to come exist. At the moment valve and htc work together to mitigate some risks I suppose. It sure creates a bit of free market type drama, and complex b2b relationships, and maybe that is a double edged sword in regards to some of the outcomes that this arrangement generates.

It’s hard to say that in all situations an approach like facebooks is better. Certainly appears simpler, maybe cheaper, but maybe not when you think of the infrastructure requires, and it’s eventual disappointments at launch. On the other hand vive and htc have many hands with many eyes and many motivations adding more voices and a certain degree of nimbleness, if clear goals are set and both work to leverage their unique, but divided labor.

In the end I’ve just spent a good couple of minutes typing this out and it all sounds just as much a criticism of a particular moment in time, as yours. I’m guessing everyone has a long game. And we haven’t seen the next big step forward. Weve seen a big push to make things cheaper, with minimal tech innovations. Gpus are sky high. Facebook is carrying a lot of weight. Who knows about the knuckles? I’m waiting for a gen 2 still. Whether it’s rifters getting upsold on the touch, Or vivers getting stuffed with Enterprise hmds, instead of gen 2 – let’s forget about the new wireless hmd lites from both companies – , in the end there are always pros and cons. Vive and htc see a market where a vr capable setup on PC can be cost prohibitive. They can spread the burden of slower growth possibilities across the shoulders of two companies, opening and closing the spigot as needed, and giving RD time to come out with truly impressive products.

    • Jerald Doerr

      Lol

    • daveinpublic

They’re planning an update for Fall 2018, 2 football field tracking. /s

      • Jistuce

        With a new 200-yard cable!

  • Firestorm185

I think the word “laughable” is quite useful in this context.

    • Yoshi Kato

Yeah, I actually laughed when I read the head line. I’m OK with spending a bit of money for cutting edge tech, but this headset is only slightly better than the 2 year old Vive. Looks like I’ll have to keep my eyes on Pimax and Oculus for their upcoming headsets.

      • Bruce Banner

LG has a 5K 120Hz headset that uses eye trackers for foveated rendering that they’re supposed to showcase at Display Week, starting around the 22nd of May. Not sure if it’s a finished product, or just showing what they’re working on. As for Pimax… their 8K can only do 80Hz.. 80 frames per second. That means asynchronous timewarp or whatever it’s called will be constantly be trying to correct it to 90 fps. That’s not the ideal situation. I think Pimax is too young, unproven, and pushing too far too fast. They need to release a commercial version that can consistently run at 90Hz, before pushing for a higher resolution. As for Oculus.. I think they’re the company to watch, especially if they get those haptic gloves finished. The only thing that worries me with Oculus.. is Facebook’s legal issues at the moment. If their stock tumbles, what happens to Oculus?

  • Surykaty

This is a large misstep.. whatever they’re drinking they should stop. The resolution bump is puny and the screendoor is still there.. not a PRO for PROs, More like PRO for prosumers or vr arcades .

    • I think you’re exactly right. First I saw this and felt insulted, but really, it is exactly what it is: a VIVE for businesses and a test bed for VIVE 2.0 components. It’s not for us. Our VIVE 2.0 will come next year.

      • ummm…

lets hope next year. they may decide to do another 2 year cycle and see what moves the other guys make. luckily, the original vive is more than enough for me.

    • Sion12

iirc, ViVE warranty doesn’t cover commercial use, and sweat can easily break the VIVE(also no warranty for this). so i am not sure if this is for archades

    • Daryl Rybotycki

Realistically, what would you use for a video card if the resolution was 4Kx4K per eye at 90+Hz?

Both the HMD and Computer required to run it would be too expensive if they could even do it…

  • Jerald Doerr

I’ll pass! Hope you guys still sell out!

  • Clifford~aka~Miku

Well people forget all the Vive Pro’s sold out at launch so they know what they are doing. It’s funny to see people bitch about the price….hey if it’s too expensive don’t buy it. Just to clarify yes I’ve purchased the Vive Pro and now I’ve purchased this package as well, what can I say I’m a VR Enthusiast. Also yes I own a DK1, DK2, Oculus Rift, Touch Controllers, Original Vive, Playsatation VR, Microsoft Mixed Reality, etc….All I can say is get a better job if you want to afford the new toys when they come out or just wait until the price drops which I’m sure they will :)

    • Lucidfeuer

Found the dumb guy who’s never worked in marketing.

      • Clifford~aka~Miku

Found the guy who’s defiantly not an adult and can only throw insults….grow up.

        • JJ

no lucid is right. Cliff is obviously the child. just read his other comments where he thinks he knows more about vr headsets because he spent the money buying each one -.-
          What in idiot

    • GunnyNinja

Are you one of those people who thinks having money makes your opinion better? I COULD buy a Vive pro. I will not. Being able to afford something doesn’t mean it’s worth it. I’ve never seen sucker spelled “VR enthusiast” before…

      • Clifford~aka~Miku

I support all VR :) Just because you can’t stomach the price doesn’t make you right either lol. It’s priced for Corporate Company Development and they are the ones that asked for this product launch so yeah if Corporate Companies want it and are willing to pay for it then that’s what the market will bare.

        • JJ

we can stomach it over and over, but why would we stomach shit…. go ahead and empty your pockets for this crap. just dont at like your opinion has any value just because you were dumb enough to buy this. I could buy a mountain of coke with my money and just because you can’t doesnt make coke any better.

        • ummm…

yes, we can’t stomach spending 1400 dollars on a product that we dont feel warrants it. it has nothing to do with the money. we’ve ALL spent the money for this hobby. doesn’t mean we have to spend stupidly. enjoy all your headsets and the like. im sure with each headset you double your enjoyment………….

        • GunnyNinja

I have each major system. I have spent much more than this costs. They did nothing more than take someone else’s panels and add a camera and sound. They didn’t improve the horrible lenses. So they give you something better to look at but make it harder to see. So no, NOT worth the price.

      • FireAndTheVoid

Calling your fellow VR enthusiast a sucker is a cheap shot. Remember that a lot of people thought we were suckers for buying into the first gen Vive at $800. Everyone has a different level of monetary pain tolerance when it comes to their interests and hobbies.

        • Sandy Wich

Except when a standard is already implemented, and then stepped over so far, with a product that’s barely an upgrade, even teenagers can clearly see it’s a damn ripoff.

    • ShiftyInc

Just because a company says it sold out doesn’t mean it really is sold out or sold a large amount of units. That is always what a company like this does to make it seem more rare to own their products.

      • Clifford~aka~Miku

We’ll if you own a lot of Stock in HTC and are apart of the financial meeting you know exactly how they are doing on units sold per quarterly….that’s all I’ll say :)

        • JJ

so you’re invested in HTC, it makes sense that you’d buy all their stuff to make sales look better…. and then come here and try to pursued people to buy it as well to help your stocks. But bottom line is this deal is a rip off and you’re the only one on here supporting it with your only support being that you have money to throw away. Well that just means you’re an idiot because we could all afford all those headsets as well, its not about our jobs, its about not spending money on stupid shit. So good job at making yourself look like an ass by bragging about all the headsets you own. We on the other hand are laughing at how much money you’ve wasted buying redundant headsets for no reason. You are the child here and need to learn how to spend your money as if its a vote.

          • Clifford~aka~Miku

WoW….lol, sorry your so upset about the price. Just work harder in life and you’ll defiantly get a better job some day :) Then you’ll be able to afford this awesome product :) Remember all people have there own wants and needs in life and will pay high prices for things they want in life.

          • jj

um what? did u even read what i typed. I could easily buy the vive pro even a dozen times, but that doeskin mean I want to buy it even once. you’re obviously the oblivious child throughout this entire forum.

          • ummm…

im pretty sure this person doesn’t buy with their own money. its possible that they do, but i think this is more of an unearned money situation. their density in understanding basic ROI leads me to believe they have gotten their money too easily, or it isn’t even their money.

          • jj

yeah good observation, you are 100% correct. After looking into this trolls twitter account it looks like hes spent 50k on start citizen… obviously someone has a rich daddy and all the time in the world on their hands to play games and not work. then has the audacity to try to act like he earned it and we didnt.

          • ummm…

or they are just a troll. either way, when you earn a dollar – and its comes with effort – you dont go around acting like he/she does.

          • jj

you’re a condescending piece of shit. None of us are saying we CANT buy it were saying we DONT WANT to buy it., Get that through your thick skull ass hole

          • ummm…

you keep going on about how none of us have a “good” job or money? im beginning to think this isn’t your money. somebody that has earned the money is much smarter with how they spend it. when i look around at my circle i see a lot of people who have money, and are very discerning consumers. its not about how much money you have, again, its about how you spend/invest your money. I suppose you got these direct from htc at a reduced price per your “close” relationship with them – or did you just buy it at msrp……..what a knucklehead you are. you are a consumer. a mindless one at that. consume dough boy – your growing fat on your gluttony. i predict you get a low roi on all your ridiculous consumption.

          • Sandy Wich

He’s mentally ill. TBH it doesn’t even matter why. I’ve seen em on a few boards lately and it’s this same thing over and over again. I think we should just all blacklist this person and move on.

I know, but so does everyone else. and like the rest of us you nor anyone else has received any numbers on the Pro. Also if you own stock in HTC you must be really on edge, since their stock dropped by a large amount these past couple of months, not to mention they almost went bankrupt if it wasn’t for Google stepping in.

You can boast all you want about having lots of money to spend. But then again, majority of people on here you can learn from, as they seem to spend it more wisely.

        • ummm…

so you listened in on their call and you think they spill all the beans there? are you a part of their finance dept too?

      • Andrew Jakobs

it’s a publicly traded company, so if they say the product was sold out, it’s sold out, otherwise it would be misinformation and that would constitude to fraude…

        • Sandy Wich

“Sold a large amount of units”

What they did was marketing 101.

Vive made fewer units based on preorder forcasted sales, and then when they all sold out because there weren’t many in the first place, they claimed success by selling out.

If I could make 200 of something in a day, but I choose to only make 5 just so I can claim I sold out in minutes and am really successful at launch, I’m being scummy and misleading by design.

There are many ways to bend the truth, and that’s the only thing big companies know or understand. Lying, but in a way that isn’t really the definition of lying.

          • Andrew Jakobs

Even if I could make 200 units in a day and only choose to make 5, and then put it on the market and all 5 units were sold out, it is not lying or bending the truth. It would be another thing if I created 5 units, sold 4 and then say everything sold out, then I would be lying.
Even if I could technically create 200 units in a day, the reason to only do 5 could be, because I don’t expect it to sell 200 units. Or it’s because I can only create 5 because I don’t have enough components to create 200. Or maybe I did only 5 to first make sure I get the initial problems solved before I start making 200 and discovering I missed something which needs me to replace 200 instead of 5. It could also be because I have another 1000 units of an previous version laying in storage waiting to be sold.
So, there can be so many reasons why the ammount of created units are ‘low’ (but what is low if we don’t know how many there exactly were), and not being ‘scummy and misleading by design’.

No sure how it’s “funny” to see people bitch about the price … the point is the bump in resolution does not warrant the additional cost, even for those like myself who can afford it if they chose.. the reality is it’s probably going for about 30% over what it’s really worth in terms of cost to deliver. It’s more about the fact that after all this time, and in a market where complete VR setups essentially are $400 USD that an $800 HMD only option is not really helping the market get momentum. New exotic tech almost always sells out on introduction, but that does not justify its cost nor prove in any fashion HTC actually knows what is best for the market. What this move IMNSHO is more about it preserving an artificially high price point, recall HTC first balked at price cutting when Oculus moved… and wound up losing market share… this doesn’t help that much to reverse the trend.

      • Clifford~aka~Miku

Do you know how much they paid for the Samsung Screens Per Eye? No…Do you know what it costs for their initial tooling for manufacturing? No….Everyone is forgetting it’s the Corporate Companies that asked for this product now instead of waiting for an actual version HTC Vive 2 so that’s why it’s “funny” they did not build this for the regular consumer they built it for Corporate World and what the Corporate World wanted for the specs was this now not later….obviously there is a need for this and they delivered :)

        • ummm…

whats the corporate world going to do with it?

          • wcalderini

            Watch Corporate porn.

          • ummm…

            ha!

        • Get Schwifty!

I don’t know the *exact* cost, but I can almost guarantee you the cost is nowhere near the price point they are selling it at. It’s fine that “Corporate Companies” asked for it, but that in no way changes the fact the price point is almost certainly artificially high for a revised headset. Again, we can agree to disagree, but I and others feel the “real cost” just doesn’t justify it. In the end it’s down to personal value on something to justify a price. If you are comfortable with an $800 price point, that’s fine, but the market in general appears to disagree and at least if this forum is fairly representative. If this is indeed an “interim” design, then the price will be high simply due to the fact they won’t sell very many which I can accept, but I will almost guarantee you the true 2.0 headset will be overpriced as a result of the pricing here, as HTC will presume the market will support it.

    • JJ

you’re jsut a troll trying to act like your rich. that doesnt justify price gouging by HTC.

      • Clifford~aka~Miku

You keep thinking that sweety :) check my twitter I tweeted my purchase. Also helps being an EngineerDesigner in Oil & Gas Industry :)

        • yupp

yeah the last thing you want to do is brag about the money you make, you’re looking like a pretty good target right about now…

          • wcalderini

I own them all too. I’m just not a braggart. I’m a fan. (A stupid one at times,…a fool and his money…). The Vive Pro IS overpriced. I paid what I consider to be an “early adoption” fee. It was either this or put my money with Pimax. I will say this. Out of all of them, in MY OPINION ONLY, the Vive offered me the best VR experience to date. So I had no qualms about an upgrade. I’ll probably feel bad when the Pimax finally ships, gets fantastic reviews, and I’ll be left twiddling until supply catches up with demand. Heck. That’s what I WANT to happen. I don’t mind being the fool as long as the industry as a whole moves forward. This may be the last train, technology wise, where I get to be first in line. I don’t mind paying the admission fee.

          • Get Schwifty!

At least you admit to the “early adopter tax” and willing to pay for it. The problem is VR is still “early” but to many it’s not, so the price seems high for just the HMD; had it been packaged with 1.0 sensors and the shitty wands, it’s price would make sense even for the prosumer market.

        • ummm…

you must be a trip in the office. a couple of bucks and you think you are a big fish. lmfao. dont come here on a forum for people that have spent a little change on this hobby and pretend that you are on a walmart site buying tishirts. in fact, its kind of amazing that we are all bothered by you – we all are likely comfortable. I think its the simple fact that you represent a degree of immaturity and the sad realization that while we all work hard for our money, there is always some moron who can grab a little bit of cash as well. the nasty personality trait may or may not hurt you in your later career.

        • GunnyNinja

Anyone who HAS to constantly tout what they have is missing something much more important…

      • Harry Cox

yup definite troll. It’s a little sad

    • ummm…

hahhhahaha, so you just consume? this isnt about the money. all of us with a vive and a tower to support it well spent money. some of us spent it at launch when we werent sure what we were getting. but this isn’t an early adopter product, to me, anymore. this is about roi. if you want to spend your money on a 1.5 that is grossly overpriced, IMO, then go ahead. Your comment only serves to highlight that obtaining money is easier then spending it wisely.

    • Sandy Wich

They made less volume, so of course it sold out. Marketing 101.

PS: Calling down strangers for jobs you don’t know they have is really ignorant.

People aren’t buying this product because it’s a joke for the price, not because VR enthusiasts can’t afford it. Think about it for a second, PCVR is an enthusiast market, this is an enthusiast website… The people commenting here are all likely early adopters that have tons of money.

If you respected the time and effort you put into making your own money, and weren’t so impatient that the idea of waiting a few months for a superior product wasn’t impossible for you, you’d be saying the same thing literally everyone else is.

You behave less than you could be.

  • Mopar Onine

    Hahahaha

  • FireAndTheVoid

After the outrage at the $800 price point for the Vive Pro HMD, I can’t help but think they really are targeting enterprise with a 2.0 bundle priced at $1400. They must know that there will be additional blow-back from the community, especially since Valve already stated that that v2.0 base stations are cheaper to produce than the v1.0 base stations.

    • GunnyNinja

What’s worse is when everyone realizes you can’t use them with the original HMD.

      • ummm…

        is that true?

        • GunnyNinja

ummm I guess you could read the article.

  • Rodgerroe

What happened to the Knuckles controllers?

    • GunnyNinja

They getting up the nerve to tell us how much they will cost…

      • Rodgerroe

        LOL.

  • ummm…

gtfo with this poop. they have to be kidding me. a 1.5 gen upgrade for a poop load more than the initial offering. lmfao. ill wait. effing ridiculous.

  • Jistuce

    BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • brubble

Given HTCs abhorrent customer service etc, I wouldnt buy from these dirtbags regardless of price.

  • As Andrian below mentioned, the goal with the new design was improve reliability and cost. Clearly it is not shown in these prices. I am concerned we are going to see a jump in V2 version of the Tracker as well.

Makes me want to spend time developing wall patterns for MSXR Samsung Odyssey to allow for large spaces since my experience in large plain open spaces suffers. However, my backyard with a row of hedges, bushes and grass works just great, other than the slope which caused me to walk into the floor :/

    https://youtu.be/hM8uwzmhaJY?list=PLqnhoKrXoLPEhJ644BQBBKRdY8ADwwe3R

And create a Tracker like device using just the white LED beacon of the controllers as well.

  • oompah

    1400$
    meant for arab sheiks
    & rich spoilt childs

  • $900 more for 1.5 Vive($300 for HMD only)…

Next gen pricing for a minor upgrade.

That blunt they smoking much be good :D

  • W…T…. F….

  • JesperL

    We knew this was coming.
    Somehow Im still in chock.
And expecting the wireless solution to be another 400$ just to kick us when we are down.

  • Andrew Jakobs

Well, their reasoning for this price makes sense, they are aiming at businesses, and for a business $1500 is not much, you can write it off anyway..
If it were actually aimed at consumers, than ofcourse it’s a ridiculous price.. But hee, you don’t have to buy it if you think it’s too much, just wait for the next headset on the market with specs like that and a much lower cost.

    • GunnyNinja

Who it’s “aimed” at is irrelevant considering how much early adopters were willing to pay for the original Vive. They know the those people want a better HMD than what they have. Just ridiculous to think no one outside of business is waiting for this and it’s a slap in the face to exclude them. They aren’t getting bit again. Poor marketing at this company.

  • Pablo Borquez

There is something that i don’t understand. Why the HTC VIVE PRO. Still have issues with sweating . On Youtube , there is a story of a guy that broke his HTC VIVE PRO after 2 day’s only. At that price , i beleave this should have been fixed by now.

  • DC

    Clearly aimed at enterprise…

  • Robbie

Looks like valve is taking the proverbial! In UK at least, original Vive is now £499 while VivePro headset only is £799 (£1298 with a extra, albeit older HMD). ViveProFull for £1299 (£1 more but only one HMD) is surely joke when the only benefit is version 2 base stations that we now discover actually cost less to manufacture than original units! Increasing margins is one thing but this is taking the biscuit (bit like their shipping charges ;-)
