Pimax today updated their “8K” headset Kickstarter page to announce that pre-production units of the 200-degree field of view headset, dubbed M1, are now shipping to a handful of closed beta testers. The company says 10 of the Pimax 8K testing units will go out in total, which will proceed the general launch to backers.

Update (05/31/18): Pimax announced they’ve begun shipments of the Pimax ‘M1’ test headsets to a select number of backers/influencers. The company previously slated shipments for ‘this month’, and they’ve just made the deadline. It’s uncertain who the testers are, but we expect to hear and see some hands-ons from the community before the rest of the Kickstarter backers receive their units.

The original article follows below:

Original article (05/17/18): Following a lens design issue that delayed the release of M1 to testers last month, Pimax is finally getting their promised pre-production “8K” VR headset out the door. Pimax said previously that beta testers would be picked from a pool of Kickstarter backers that were ‘trusted community leaders, professional reviewer, or both.’, likely gunning for the highest social media presence possible.

Pimax “8K” features dual 3,840 × 2,160 resolution panels, one per eye, boasting a 200 degree field of view.

The company says its latest update “we are very confident about M1. The plan is to start the shipments [to general backers] in June if the testers give the green light. As always, we will take the suggestions from the community into consideration to finalize Pimax 8K.”

Both the “8K” and “5K” headsets are slated to ship in the same time frame, the company says. Pimax maintains that “8K is stable at 80Hz,” and that the team is still trying to improve the refresh rate. “The worst case is 80Hz when we start to ship. 5K can reach 90Hz,” Pimax says.

As for the headset’s ergonomic controllers, the company says working prototypes will be ready in June/July, slated for a Q4 shipping window.

The company states that accompanying Lighthouse base stations will ship in October, and their own optical tracking, dubbed, Pi-tracking is still in testing however.

As for the many modules promised to backers, which includes things such as hand-tracking, eye-tracking, inside-out tracking, wireless transmitter, and scent simulation modules, the company says their top priority are both hand-tracking and eye-tracking modules.

I think this is a little ridiculous. Current video cards will not be able to run anything at those resolutions. This could hurt the VR industry more than help it… mainly due to people trying this product and getting horrible frame rates and performance.

    • Who’s this?

It’s being upscaled. Current video cards can push 2x1440p just fine.

      • Yet Another Opera Lover

Yep, this is about eliminating the screen door effect, not pushing 4K x 2 resolutions (though I’d imagine the SLI GTX 1080 Ti could do it for both games that support the feature).

All that said, did they ever fix the FoV geometry warping issues? That’s the biggest problem I’d like to see an update on.

        • NooYawker

I wonder why SLI seems to be abandoned by game devs.

          • JJ

lol not to mention the refresh rate is still below the industry standard and people act like thats not a big deal when really it is.

I like to point out how Yet Another Opera Lover correctly mentioned 4k X 2. yet the pimax is called 8k :(

lol I thought it was common knowledge that 8k is NOT 4K x 2 its actually 4K x 4 and its pretty shitty of pimax to say 8k. Its the same as if we had an 8k wide display that was only 1 pixel tall and calling it 8k. Just like the pimax which is 8k wide but only half as tall as normal displays. This is because it is two 4k monitors and 8K would be 4 4K monitors.

This is a dead on arrival headset, some will buy it, but itll be quickly forgotten. You’d need the best graphics card out there to barely run this and they seem to have forgotten how hard it is to get an affordable high end gpu on the market today, further reducing who will be able to run this.

          • VRStrix

When you talk its like theres a constant log of shit coming our your mouth

          • JJ

um ok? prove me wrong then

          • WhatDownthere

Yeah they can’t they just like to troll

          • brubble

Haha man, thanks for the good laugh!

          • ThatOneGuy

Man if you call that humor I feel bad for you.

          • brubble

How nice of you, really means a lot.

          • Doodie23

What he said makes sense, what drugs are you on?

          • jiggy

I think what he says is right

          • NooYawker

I had people arguing with me that if I put 2 4K TV’s next to each other I would technically have an 8k TV. This product is using deceptive marketing.

          • jj

haha thats exactly what theyre doing, its deceptive or they’re just dumb

          • JDawg

Except that 8K literally comes from the horizontal resolution. 16:9 ratios were just originally assumed for TVs. I don’t think it’s false marketing to call it 8K but it definitely is gonna be confusing for some consumers.

          • JJ

nah thats an industry standard so thats false marketing

          • NooYawker

It’s flat out bullshit to call this 8k

          • johngrimoldy

Yes, it’s bullshit deceptive to call this 8K and they’ll pay the price later. If I don’t see 8K of resolution when I close one eye, then it ain’t 8K. When I look at my 4K TV, each eye is getting 4K!

          • CoffeeBuzz

pay a price later.. what rubbish is that. The already taken in over 17 million. I think they will be fine. The ppl who wont buy it because they already have something else they spend $$ on, or cannot justify the cost of a new VR device will be the ones to say crap like that.. Not the owners of the device if it works as intended the 8k will mean nothing.

          • Graham J ⭐️

It’s just a name, who cares. Xbox 360 doesn’t have 360 of anything. Whatever. Anyone buying this knows its resolution.

“4k stereo” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

          • JJ

lol its just a name? the main selling point is the 8K feature that they dont have. the xbox 360 wasnt saying they could do anything 360 related…. if it were an Xbox 8K and they said they had 8K but didn’t everyone would shit their pants.

its that simple if you cannot see that then you’re just trolling

          • Graham J ⭐️

the main selling point is the 8K feature that they dont have

That is a non sequitur. You find me a single person who is backing because they believe it’s an 8k stereo headset – hell, anyone at all who believes that at all – and I’ll say you were right. But you won’t because everyone knows they named it based on total horizontal resolution, just like they did with the 5k.

Clearly you think that’s disingenuous but it doesn’t matter what you think – that IS the name and it should be used properly.

          • CoffeeBuzz

Wrong. the main selling point(s) are its LISTED AND PUBLIC SPECs.. You seem a little salty ? perhaps you want it to fail so you can feel better about your current gen gear or something. Graham is correct it is just a name. Owners of this device will not care as long as it performs as intended

          • FireAndTheVoid

My understanding is that it doesn’t scale very well – two GPUs don’t give twice the performance of a single GPU. Instead it is somewhere around 30-40% more performance. This is because some of what is involved in rendering for one eye can be reused for the second. NVidia VRWorks supports SLI setups but only a handful of games enabled support for it. Even if it doesn’t scale perfectly, I would still appreciate the option.

          • Icebeat

sure, pay double price for a 30% bump in performance….

          • NooYawker

People do. It’s the only way to get decent frame rate playing a 4k game.

          • Yet Another Opera Lover

Mostly ‘cause it’s buggy af and not platform agnostic. There’s no trivial way to add VR SLI support to both AMD and Nvidia cards in One fell swoop.

        • Adrian Meredith

yes that was only in the v early prototypes which for some insane reason they gave to people like tested who are quite big. They have no clue about marketing they did the same thing at ces

        • ArSh

SLI can certainly push dual 1440p resolutions (I already supersample beyond that on my 1080s on the VR titles that support SLI). People whining about it not being 8K or even 2x4K have failed to consider the bandwidth implications. Try running 2 x 4K x 90Hz over a single DP cable over long distance (you’d need at least two heavy DP cables). And then try it over wireless (even with compression it starts getting expensive). There are other hardware limitations to overcome besides just GPU rendering speed.

      • FireAndTheVoid

I would also add that the upscaling is happening onboard the headset, so there is no additional computation required from the graphics card.

        • Icebeat

yeah, it will only cost 10 Hz, (instead of 90Hz, the Pimax refresh rate will be 80HZ)

      • Andrew Jakobs

No they don’t unless you’re referring to the highend cards, the 1080’s etc.

        • CoffeeBuzz

          1060 and 1070 also

          • Andrew Jakobs

the 1060 certainly doesn’t… it already has trouble pushing the regular vive and rift. You’ll have to set the settings to pretty low.

  • NooYawker

10 people are very excited right now.

    • JJ

      lol right!

  • Andrew Jakobs

So it’s like the initial release of the HTC Vive Pro, you’ll need a set of basestations already to have actual tracking…………

    • Kryojenix

For now, yes. They haven’t finalised their base station design and production.
Later they’ll sell a complete kit and I’d expect they’ll sell the base stations separately as well.

      • Patrick Bradley

        Seems kind of stupid.

        • Kryojenix

          Not really.
It’s designed to work with SteamVR, so people who already have Vive v1 or v2 Lighthouses can already use the headset with their existing setup.
If you have eager customers and you can give them what they want, why make them wait until your more universal product is ready?

I expect even when the full Pimax set is released, they’ll still make available the individual components for sale for anyone that wants to upgrade their existing SteamVR setup.

          • MW

It is stupid. Because if you have vive you don’t need pimax (if you average Joe). unless you not crapping money. And you can’t just buy lighthouse in nearby shop. So pimax whinout tracking and controllers is useless.

          • Kryojenix

            No, you’re wrong.
Average Joes bought Oculus Go, or PSVR. Or Oculus Rift if they’re a little above average.
For Vive owners, Pimax 8K is going to be a fantastic upgrade for those who choose to get one. This matches HTC’s own strategy of offering the Vive Pro headset by itself first for existing owners! Except Pimax 8K is going to be a much bigger upgrade for a proportionally much better price (we hope).

If you don’t already have SteamVR tracking and controllers, you are not supposed to have bought a Pimax headset only. Anyone who did is … stupid.

          • MW

Why on earth you assume that ”average Joe” will buy cv1/Vive over pimax?? What’s your point? If he will not get tracking or controllers he will not. That’s my point. But if pimax care about sales numbers, than they should sale entire bundle.

          • dk

people buying a pimax already have a few headsets

          • MW

No. You wrong. Very very wrong. I know a lot of people (I’m assure you-homo sapiens) and they are waiting for first good enough looking vr, to buy their first hmd. Because they know that cv1/Vive looks like crap. And pimax may be a game changer for them.

          • dk

kickstarter with a chinese company that hasn’t made anything of this calibre before ………..only people that r tired of the rift and vive and have additional money to throw away r taking the risk of getting a pimax

          • CoffeeBuzz

Pimax made the 4k already. So they had some experience with the industry. Your description of Pimax backers sounds a bit salty.. the way you say it. But it is true that we backers know that VR is still missing a lot of needed features, and the Pimax 8K offers to fill in many of those missing things. I dont feel like it is much of a risk although it has some, as all KS products do(I dont see much risk now that shipping has started) .The only downside is the long wait after backing.

          • dk

the pimax 4k per eye …..will be somewhat good or even close to great ….although the angular resolution is something like only 20% more and it’s much harder to power it
….the point is the average gamer getting into vr will never consider it over cheaper options from well established players like oculus or even cheaper winmr headsets

          • Kryojenix

If they’re waiting for Pimax, then they can just wait for the full kit. There’s no reason for Pimax not to release their headset first to upgraders. The point is that the headset is nearly ready, whereas the base stations and controllers are 6-10 months away.

If someone’s been hanging out for a Pimax kit and can’t wait any longer, then they can just buy a Vive kit (which is much cheaper than it used to be) and a Pimax 8K headset to use in place of the Vive headset (which they may be able to flog as a spare part on eBay)

Besides, you can’t buy the Pimax headset yet anyway. Only kickstarter backers will get it soon. Then a retail pre-order campaign after that – they’ll likely still offer headset only at an earlier date than the date they can provide the full kit.

So, it’s not stupid, its customer-focused savvy marketing based on what they are able to provide soon, versus what will take more time.

          • CoffeeBuzz

Well hindsight is 20/20 and it is odd for you to argue against an already proven strategy.. The KS made millions, and they then rec. 15m in additional funding doing it their way.

          • CoffeeBuzz

If you have a Vive you do not need a pimax? What a strange thing to say.. So if I have a tent i do not need an apartment.. if I have an apartment I do not need a house ? Pimax is an upgrade.. I backed it and own Vive because of the Pimax promise of increased resolution AND 200 fov.. things VR is missing right now

  • Kryojenix

Why isn’t this website called “Road” to VR ?

    • JJ

Because road to vr isn’t making false claims about being or having a road like Pimax is doing by claiming they have 8K resolution when its only 8K wide but 4K tall

      • ArSh

Are 4K monitors actually 4K? Hint: no.

        • kjfhj

what?? lol yes they are by the industry standard which pimax does not abide by

          • Kryojenix

Neh mate, 4K is 4096×2160, but most “4K” monitors are just UHD 3840×2160.

          • Peter K

Um pimax 8k headset does have a 7680 (8k) horizontal resolution.

          • Kenji Fujimori

Chery boy still virginal masturbating to VR porn I see. Yes `8K` is as real as you`ll get..

      • Jistuce

It isn’t 4k tall. It’s 2160 tall. 2k if you need it shaved to as few characters as possible.

  • Arturs Gerskovics

I wouldnt mind Pimax controllers for a start… hope they sell them seperate

    • Kryojenix

They probably will. They’re not coming until next year probably though.

  • Kryojenix

    “Road” to VR

    • Graham J ⭐️

lol seriously… there is no road, better use quotes!

    • Kenji Fujimori

      Road to my ass

  • Lucidfeuer

The fuck is your problem with quotes, are you a paid PR or something?

    • Graham J ⭐️

Not at all. It bothers me that Scott here has a problem with the names of some VR products and uses quotes to disparage them every chance he gets. It’s unprofessional.

      • Lancelot

Pimax has named their product after a resolution which it does not have. Think about that slowly. If Samsung were selling their “4k Smart-Tv” with a 1080p display, and a person writing an article about it called it Samsung’s ‘”4K” Smart-TV’, would you be leaving half a dozen messages about how it bothers you that the author would be unprofessionally disparaging like that? These posts gush bias.

        • Graham J ⭐️

Nothing about 1080p is 4k. The Pimax does have ~8k pixels horizontally. It could be misleading, it could be intentional, I don’t know. But their product is theirs to name and it’s unprofessional for a journalist to use it improperly, that’s all I’m saying.

I don’t work in the industry, have no stake in Pimax and am not a backer. I’m quite happy with my Vive. That doesn’t preclude me from pointing out journalistic errors.

          • PL

This isn’t a journalistic error. It is a journalistic choice, and an entirely reasonable one.

Firstly, there is a fundamental problem with the name of this product, and it’s not just because it’s misleading. They have named the product after a technical term and NOTHING else, which could be argued isn’t a valid name at all. How many tech products can you think of where the only defining part of the name is just a relevant technical term? It hardly ever happens – there is almost always another word or code.

Then there is the misleading part. It IS misleading, there’s no “could be” about it. “8K” is not even a valid way of describing its horizontal pixel count. The hardware is only capable of 2560×1440 upscaled per display. So this horizontal pixel count of 7680 can only ever show 5120.

Can you imagine the backlash of any respected TV manufacturer creating a TV with a 4K panel that could only display a 2560×1440 signal and giving it the SINGLE name of “*CompanyName* 4K”?

You can be sure that a ton of journalists would also start putting that 4K in quotes.

          • Raphael

You mean like audio amps with 1500w peak output when in actual fact they were less than 100 watts? There is no backlash aside from boring idiots who have nothing of interest going on in their lives so they bitch endlessly about the naming of a VR product. You are a boring twat! So fecking boring!

          • JJ

wow raphael… i don’t think you should end an argument with personal attacks. it shows how defensive you’re being when proved wrong. Multiple people have commented back at you countering what you said and all you can do is call them boring twats…

          • Raphael

I agree with you on the name-calling. Disagree on the “proved wrong”. Pimax 8k… it’s not really 8k… even pimax have stated that. Do we really need to take legal action to get them to rename it? Do we need therapy to get over the anxiety caused by “8k”? If anything this has inspired me to create my own custom VR headset and name it “custard pi 16k”. I can tell you right now it won’t even offer 8k displays.

          • GunnyNinja

That is why I keep seeing “This user is Blocked”…

          • Graham J ⭐️

You’re suggesting that the rules of English grammar with respect to product names are dependent on the author’s judgement about the validity of said name. This is incorrect.

If quotes were needed in the headline, which they are not in this case, the correct use would be to put them around the entire name, not just a portion of it. That is true regardless of what you or he think of the validity of the name.

But, since you seem to want to discuss the validity of the name for some reason, there are in fact a total of ~8k pixels across the two displays and each one is addressable by the display driver chip. Clearly they were basing the product name on the display resolution rather than signal input capability.

Note that the “Pimax 8KX” also has ~8k pixels across yet has different input specifications.

  • Peter Laurent

Only if we agree to also use:
    HTC Vive “Pro”
    Windows “Mixed Reality” Headset
    Oculus “Rift”

    • Graham J ⭐️

ha, actually he does do it for WMR but not “Pro” as I’ve pointed out to him before.

  • MarquisDeSang

Pi max : Upscale to 8k & Upstretch 220 degrees

    • theonlyrealconan

It is not even native 4k per eye.

      • Konchu

That depends on the version. There are 2 one that needs a godly PC dual inputs that run native res and the 8K that upscales. I went with that one cause I want to be able to play games on it with spending 4k on a video cards. :)

        • JustNiz

You made a good choice. Stuff like Elite:Dangerous and Fallout4VR on the 8KX will basically be a nausea-inducing slideshow no matter what GPU you have, at least for the next 2+ years. Also, the ratio of 1440p to 4K isn’t that high, which means that upscaling can do a great job of filling in, so in actual use there will be hardy any, if any, noticeable visual difference between the 8K and the 8KX.

    • JJ

Damn Marquis/jean we found something we agree on!! today’s a good day

    • Graham J ⭐️

Actually it’s upscaling to 4k stereo.

    • Raphael

What are you actually complaining about? The image clarity far exceeds Vive and rift and the FOV too.

      • MarquisDeSang

I will believe when I see it running real VR games like Skyrim and not just fruit ninja. It reminds me of Xbox One X strong specs numbers that failed to materialized anything of value in reality. Xbox One X is not powerful enough for VR contrary to trusty old PS4.

        • Raphael

Considering you seem to hang-out at R2VR you don’t seem to keep up with tech progress. Pimax has been used with DCS World to start with and that makes skyrim look like kiddy stuff.

          • MarquisDeSang

Ok ok. I trust you old friend. I believe what you are saying and will wait for the reviews before talking bull… I am sad because I don’t have a 1080ti to run it.

          • Raphael

It seems the biggest issues they’re having have been creating a seamless image in each eye from the multiple displays.

I’d also like a 1080Ti… I’m using an overclocked 1070. Most VR games don’t even make full use of a GTX 1000 series GPU.

Ever tried Raw Data, Serious Sam VR, Eve Valkyrie? All make use of VRworks giving you full performance. On Raw Data I can max out the graphics and still have smooth gameplay. I wish it was compulsory for game developers to use VRworks or Nvdia could makeit work without relying on devs to add code.

          • Peter K

1180 will be unveiled in the upcoming months. There are already 4k HDR G-sync 144hz monitor out this month (if you want to spend 2.5k), it kinda shows how powerful the upcoming GPU must be to handle those next gen monitors. Then there is the 1180ti, Titan, and possibly the support of NV-link, which will completely destroy old style Sli.

          • Raphael

NV-link? I must look that up. SLI and VR SLI are a waste of time because they rely on game developers for support. If there was a completely automatic system not relying on Muppet developers to add support for individual games, that would be great.

          • JustNiz

Yep its true that some people’s rigs will be too ghetto for it. If you want the best you have to pay to play. Blaming Pimax 8K for that is like blaming Ferrari that their cars are too fast to be affordable. The upside is that your GPU actually only has to hit 1440p X2 @ 80HZ, since the 8K upscales the resolution in hardware. People buying the 8KX (the native 2x4K version) are stupid and deluding themselves that there will even be a GPU in existence that can handle it in the next say 2 years at least. Stuff like Elite:Dangerous and Fallout4VR on the 8KX will basically be a nausea-inducing slideshow.

          • CoffeeBuzz

You will not need any additional hardware. They had it running on a 1070 mobile chip. if you can VR now you can VR on the Pimax8x as it takes your existing GPU output and upscales it on the HMD hardware. 1080ti not required at all.

        • JustNiz

          > I will believe when I see it running real VR games like Skyrim and not just fruit ninja.

You mean like these? (and this is just the V5 prototype which has already been improved on) :

I think X is just as capable of VR as the PS4. Phones with much lesser specs do VR. Would either PS4 or Xbox One X be as good as PC VR probably not but. PS4 Pro is better than PS4 though, so the X is an upgrade over the original and could most likely make solid games. I just think MS is being very cautious with VR which is understandable with their record this gen.

        • Facts

If my samsung galaxy 6 can run vr Xbox definitely can run it

          • MarquisDeSang

If it could, it would. So it cannot.

          • Facts

Because microsoft isn’t interested in VR

    • Mak Gunt

I don’t think you even realize it, but at 200 degrees you won’t be able to really see those 20 degrees left even if you tried…

  • nipple_pinchy

I’m hyped. I’ve got an Odyssey and love it but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t like an expanded FOV and ever better resolution.

  • MW

Let me guess. Final product (full bundle) to buy in q2 2019 for 800-1000usd. So much for a hype. Am’i wrong?

  • nipple_pinchy

I’m hyped. I’ve got an Odyssey and love it but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t like an expanded FOV and ever better resolution.

  • theonlyrealconan

You should be honest and tell people that it is not even native 4k per eye. Shame on you.

At least you put the 8k in quotes.

    • JJ

      Thank you!

    • Sandy Wich

And Sony shouldn’t have called the PRO a 4k device during it’s reveal 20-30 times in an hour.

Nintendo shouldn’t have hyped virtual console before Switch release just to get people excited for portable classics on the go, then drop the service outright for a rental program.

      Microsoft sh-

      Lol.

      Microsoft shouldn’t have been born.

      • JustNiz

        > Microsoft shouldn’t have been born.

I wish. Computers in general would be decades further ahead, and people wouldn’t ever have gotten to the point where they just silently accept that buggy, insecure software is somehow the norm, and someone other than them actually owns their computer.

    • Joe

Pimax has always very clearly stated that it’s “only” 4k per eye. As there is no accepted industry standards for VR resolutions, it is perfectly acceptable for them to call it the 8k as it is 7,680 pixels wide.

It’s really getting old having people whine, “But, but, but…. It’s not 8k” every single time an article about it gets posted. I’m sorry if you don’t like it, but it is 8k. No quotes required.

      • Raphael

Yup, I reckon so. Preachy annoying muppets.

      • JustNiz

Its actually not even true 4k native per eye but upscaled 1440p (2,560 x 1,440) per eye. Even though I’m a backer, I’ve always said that calling that 8K is blatantly false advertising. It still gonna look significantly better than everything else out right now though, including the Vive Pro.

        • CoffeeBuzz

It is not even close to false advertising. They list the specs very clearly all over the place. Its a catchy name.. get over it.

      • Andrew McEvoy

Yeah its a real pissy attitude alright.

      • theonlyrealconan

Link to where they “clearly state” the 4k per eye is upscaled/not native? (Not talking about the 8k part, which is obviously wrong).

    • Jason Liang

That’s right for ppl like you too stupid to read. Spec is available to all to see for a long time. But yes I agree, they should make it absolutely idiot proof.

      • theonlyrealconan

Specs clearly state it is 4k per eye. Not 1440 upscaled to 4k per eye. Seems like you are really upset over this?

    • MadMonkey

omg road to vr isn’t actually a road wtf

  • JJ

yeah but its not really 8K so its highlighting that fact

    • Graham J ⭐️

Obviously, but it’s incorrect to do so.

      • V Zaporozhets

By the same logic, can I say that my phone has 40 Mp camera resolution? because that’s the total resolution of 2 back and 1 front cameras.

        • Graham J ⭐️

No because that would be an erroneous description. We’re not talking about descriptions, we’re talking about names.

          • V Zaporozhets

I’m talking about what you said in the comment that I replied to, not the name. The total resolution is irrelevant to a stereoscopic device, because that’s not how our eyes work. We only care about resolution per eye. Thus, the product name is misleading. If you include spec in the name, that doesn’t suddenly make it Okay.

            >It has ~8k pixels of total horizontal resolution.

          • Graham J ⭐️

What I was talking about in the comment you replied to was the name. Total resolution does matter because half of it goes to each eye. But I don’t really care whether the name is correct according to anyone in particular, I just think that would-be journalists should follow the rules of English grammar and use quotes properly.

    • Kenji Fujimori

      China..

  • Da Mo (JFlash)

There feeding the trolls, “Road” to vr is a HTC shill

    • Graham J ⭐️

hehe pretty much… Go ahead, I use an ad blocker ;)

  • Ted Joseph

I cant understand all this hate towards Pimax… Any company that pushes the boundary of a product forces others to work harder, and we as customers get the benefit. I am happy that they are pushing for higher res and wider FOV. If they didn’t it would be 5 years before we seen anything from HTC or Oculus with these specs… This will force HTC, Oculus, soon to come Apple, etc. to continue to improve the experience.

    • theonlyrealconan

It does not help that they call it 8k, when it is not. It is 4k per eye (8k is 4k times 4). And they are not making it clear that it is not even native 4k per eye. It is 1440 upscaled to 4k per eye.

I wanted to trust them. Until i became a backer, talked with devs on the forum, then canceled when i found out some of the shadey stuff they were doing. So i canceled and will wait for real reviews. (I still want them to succeed, but being smater about it).

      • Joe

Except that it is perfectly legit for Pimax to call it the 8K as it is 7,680 pixels wide. And they’ve never tried to hide the resolution or the fact that the 8K uses an upscaled image while the 8K-X will run native resolution.

Please stop with your misinformation campaign.

    • JustNiz

Ted I totally agree. There’s lots of clueless morons here either showing their ignorance or totally trolling.

    • CoffeeBuzz

Not a lot, just a handful of guys repeating themselves over and over

  • LowRezSkyline

I hope it weighs less than it is huge/ugly.

Also, good luck being the first kickstarter that isn’t late as fuck and disappointing as fuck.

Remember you can’t fax glitter… not with that attitude! Not with any attitude!

    • dogbite

It’s weight has been commented on for months.
Anyone who thinks it looks ugly is using it wrong. VR looks good inside and how it looks to people outside is unimportant to the user. 2 years of putting people into VR and none have asked ‘how does it look on me” You want to look good while wearing an hmd buy a suit or dress. Function over forum is the order of the day at his time. imo

      • CoffeeBuzz

No kidding. the Vive looks like weird spider face.

  • James Krisvoy

Is it going to work with 3D blu ray?

  • Sandy Wich

Well, it’s time to see how it does.

Do I buy the biggest and best VR headset of all time, that’ll trade blows with all other VR for 3+ years to come?

    …Or will it suck?

    ….Hmm……

    • asdf

I’d make a bet with you it wont trade blows with VR for three years. All it has is fake 4K and thatll be surpassed within a1.5 years. I’m willing to bet

      • Andrew McEvoy

        I’ll take that bet.

  • Kenji Fujimori

Why are publications still pimping this out to be `8K` when it clearly obvious it is 4k x 4k Chinese crap

    • Peter K

You should climb your mount. Fuji Japanese boya

  • JustNiz

Bullshit headline. Pimax didn’t hard commit to June. Scott please be professional enough to report on what they actually said and not reinterpret it for clickbait/drama purposes.

  • EditorTom

What software will this be able to run? Will users have access to Steam titles?

    • Andrew McEvoy

Yes it runs Steam and Oculus games.

  • marc

can’t wait for this 8k vr headset

  • MosBen

So, from the wording of the post is it safe to assume that Road to VR isn’t one of the influencers getting one of these?

Edit: And just because I’m curious, will Road to VR be getting one of the Kickstarter models to review?

  • NooYawker

LOL, re-reading the argument that two 4k lenses equals 8k is hilarious.

    • Andrew McEvoy

      Oh let it go mate

      • NooYawker

        I can’t!!! It’s so stupid!!! 4k+4k=8k.. come on!!!

        • Andrew McEvoy

Ahhh…well fair enough but you know what I mean.

          • NooYawker

          • NooYawker

He means it’s not nice to make fun of slow kids.

        • dogbite

I spend a lot of time reading what fellow backers on the Pimax forum think. Be assured none of us are operating under delusion with regard to this. To us the important things about this tech are that the fov and panel assembly are a move beyond what is available and this if it comes out as intended it will be next gen, regardless. RTVR has put quotation marks around 8k an often mentions actual specs as does Pimax both verbally and on their site. If the retail release maintains the name and there has been a movement there to rename it at that point, I am sure the point will continue to be clarified. No biggie. We know what it is and it looks to be what we are hoping for. We shall see. In the meantime most see it as the usual thing that crop up in late night commercials all the time. Regardless of what product people consider they should always do their research.

    • JJ

right haha it give me a good laugh from time to time.

    • dogbite

Ya nobody else have ever done that kind of thing before.

  • bud

    few points…
    1- 3,840 × 2,160 resolution panels, one per eye 200deg fov
I dont care who you are or what your complant is, that is pretty rad specs even if @ 80hz.

2- Getting this headset for under £1k…. if you are an actually old dude in his 40’s you will know what the cost of these type headset was not too long ago.. think 150k… 250k… so who is kidding who about dropping £1k to get this, it was actually a little less.

3- What is going to be good here… is this may not be as polished as the Oculus? But it is going to be a very very solid starting point in conversation and our imaginations about what will be next from the big players.

If the Pimax 8k is every thing and a bag of chips.. this is going to push the big brand versions along even further… so we wont get gen 2 rift… it will be a 2.2, or 2.5 in spec.

Pimax to be and the community that took the chance and backed, this is what even this whole website road to vr is about.

This is about selflessly pushing VR forward… MAKING IT HAPPEN… DOING IT…

Not talking and talking and making videos and documents and on and on.

Making it happen and delivering a truly unique product.

This could be a really important product… it could help indicate where we are and what is just over the next hill on the road to true VR.

    @ Road to VR.
Can you put some kind of scratch pad or place people can post about their 8k pimax?

Ive got plenty of grunt here I will be able to see what it can do.

    • bud

Im pretty excited and I am looking forward to looking into it in game, I hope it bounds and runs off steam vr / home easily.

      • MosBen

I love your enthusiasm, and you’re right that if this thing turns out to function even close to as well as a Rift or Vive, but with a huge FOV, it’ll be amazing. That said, skepticism is warranted. VR is something that can really not work if something seemingly small just doesn’t quite function the way that it’s supposed to. Pimax has a lot to prove, but here’s hoping that they can deliver. I guess we’ll see in the next few weeks.

        • dogbite

These units being release to be tested and reported on by a group that contains members with influencing VR channels says a lot about what Pimax thinks. They seem quite confident we are going to be pleased. The multiple redesigns (6) of the lenses should be well worth the wait and delays. Pimax has certainly gone to great effort to make this the best they can. People talk about. if this works out well the “big boys” will have to scramble to answer. I submit that if those people look closely at the financing and sponsors behind Pimax they will realize that (if) this turns out as well as it looks to be, Pimax is about to become one of the big boys.

  • oompah

    great finally

  • Dave Graham

This is shaping up very nicely – at this rate I might be able to get one Q1 next year.
