Today Pimax announced it’s introducing a new business-focused ruggedized line of its “8K” series virtual reality headsets, set to release sometime this year.

According to an MRTV video interview with Pimax’s head of US operations Kevin Henderson, Pimax says it will produce ruggedized (RE) versions, dubbed Pimax “8K” RE, “5K” Plus RE and “5K” OLED RE, the latter of which is patterned after the Pimax “5K” XR (ex-“5K” BE).

The company says the new line will offer numerous hardware ruggedization features intended for high-traffic venues such as location-based entertainment (LBE) facilities, and education/training institutions.

Henderson told MRTV that ruggedization features include water resistance, a new foam insert, rigid headstrap, and thicker cabling.

Henderson additionally told Road to VR that the new RE line will feature greater shock tolerances, more robust components, metal buttons, higher lifespan switches, and accessories including a cover that can go over the front of the headset for greater protection in high-traffic environments.

There’s no word at this time on exactly when the headsets will be available to businesses, or at what price, although Henderson tells MRTV it will be due out “in the coming months” and that they’ll be priced “around $500-ish more on the per-unit basis.”

The business-focused headsets are said to include the same wide field of view and modular ability as the respective consumer versions thanks to the two USB Type-C accessory ports. The ‘RE’ headsets feature the same fundamental specs as the consumer counterparts (seen below).

Pimax is also currently in the production phase of the long-awaited SteamVR 2.0 base stations. Henderson tells MRTV that it’s “very likely the Lighthouses will beat the controllers to market,” although he admits its unclear how the company will proceed, be it through a staggered release or a controller/basestation hardware bundle. Henderson expects to release more info in the next few weeks, and that the company plans to fulfill backers first, then open up to general consumers at a later date, although the bundling issue is still undecided at this time.

A Pimax-built basestation would represent the first opportunity for consumers to purchase a 2.0 SteamVR basestation, as HTC doesn’t actively sell them individually.

I’m still waiting for my 5k+

    • Hivemind9000

What backer number are you? I’m #5872 and got my 5k+ several weeks ago (in Australia). They must be getting close to delivering to all the kickstarter backers by now… ?

  • oompah

To all these vr headset manufacturers I want to say that in most of the headsets , the center of gravity is lopsided therefore they should provide some counterweight on opposite side.
Also instead of this kinda headset, it’d be better to make a helmet similar to what used by defence pilots but also with added air conditioning which wont be a big issue I believe.
Guys tech is good but ergonomics, ease of use & being humane is most important.

    **SteamVR and Oculus Home**

Man, they’re really walking in that gray market area with their content. A for profit company marketing it has Oculus Home support may bring the ban hammer from Oculus/Facebook.
    We’ll see.

    • Blaexe

Doubt it. In the end, Facebook wants other users to use Oculus Home. There’s just no official support yet.

      • NooYawker

It depends how much data Facebook can scrape off of other headsets on their store.

    • Kev

Oculus would be stupid to prevent developers from reaping the revenue from the added sales this type of compatibility brings even though it is “grey” revenue. The devs do make money this way off of HTC and Pmax etc..

    • wow

much like MS and windows. Oculus wants to be that interface of VR pirated or not.

  • impurekind

I still don’t understand how the Pimax can run Oculus Home and its games directly when it’s not an official headset. Anyone care to explain how this works?

    • Blaexe

It doesn’t run Oculus Home. They implemented their own version of Revive right into PiTool.

      • Schadows

There are the same “bugs” (compatibility issues) on the same games between ReVive and PiTool.
But it’s not like it concerns me, since it doesn’t include the couple of Rift exclusives I have bought

      • Jerald Doerr

I really really really want to see that guy/s thats always bitchin… “I really want to play this Oculus game but I’m not going to use revive”
I just want to see the look on there face as they’re playing with there new Pimax bragging about how it’s supported by Oculus and or Pimax without needed ReVive… Ooops…. Stupid…

      • impurekind

And this lets you run Oculus games directly, as if you were running them direction on a Rift, without having to go through any kind of Steam or Steam-like crap?

    • Jerald Doerr

It’s called the good old ancient art of Chines technology…. Steal/copy your shit and make it less than half as good… Had it happen to me once and I’m still not over it!

  • JesuSaveSouls

It is about the only new vr that is intriguing me. From what I heard its not a simple setup process to go from headset to gaming. At 500 I can say it would really capture my interest.Praise Jesus!

    • 3872Orcs

Pimax5k+ is supposedly a good headset though not perfect and best suited for VR enthusiasts. It’s setup process is fairly simple and comparable to a Vive setup, it use PiTool software and SteamVR. Price is $699 and then you still need lighthouse base stations and controllers. Praise the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

    • wow

No way this product would be priced that low, it’s unrealistic to even think that. This is for enthusiasts. I suggest you look at Oculus’ line they are more into the low-end main stream headsets at a cheaper price.

    • MosBen

It looks like the intent was that these versions will cost $500 over and above the non-rugged versions.

  • NooYawker

It’s good to see they delivered all their headsets to every single person who has paid for them. Because that’s why they’re moving on to develop more products right?

    • ViRGiN

      ‘ ‘ c h i n e s e ‘ ‘

    • Hivemind9000

Yup. I got mine several weeks ago and I am probably close to the end of the list of backers.

  • Chris Omega

Is it actually confirmed that Pimax is making the 2.0 SteamVR basestations?
HTC doesn’t make the 2.0 SteamVR basestations.
Unless Pimax is actually making them only Valve makes the 2.0 SteamVR basestations.

  • Rowdy123

A zillion years to launch one product … STILL in pre-order mode … almost no (or actually NO) insight into when pre-orders will ever be shipped … the ones that have been randomly shipped have issues …. but yeah … on to the next project!

    • wcalderini

MIne shipped. Pre-ordered in November and arrived in late February. If you lready have a Vive setup it’s basically plug and play, once you download the Pitools software. The ONLY problem I had originally was being like 9 feet tall in VR and no matter how many times I ran room set-up, it just would not fix. One click in the handy dandy “VR advanced settings add-on” fixed it for good though. Still have not had as much time to really explore it as I would have liked and personal issues have kept me from devoting more time to putting it through it’s paces, but my original impression is VERY high. It’s really what the Vive Pro, which I also have, SHOULD have been. The added FOV (even at only half) makes a world of difference in immersion. Now I just have to figure out how to hook up my old deluxe audio strap from the original Vive. (My need 3D printed parts).
Just letting you know they DO exist and they have been shipping. (Birmingham AL, if anybody wanted to know location).

    • Hivemind9000

That’s just over one year to launch 3 products. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good story bro.

  • wow

What are you trying to prove to me exactly?
Also its + 50 for shipping not 500…

    • Hivemind9000

He’s saying the ruggedized/business versions are around $500 more than the consumer versions.

    • Jerald Doerr

Sorry wow…. That message was not for you… It was for JesuSaveSouls..

      • wow

Ohh ok no worries. I was just confused but yea I hive made me realize what you meant anyways

  • Jistuce

I “really” “like” how many quote marks your “editorial” “policy” generates.
