Downpour Interactive and Coatsink today announced that Onward, the VR tactical shooter, is coming to Oculus Quest on July 30th.

Downpour Interactive founder Dante Buckley first announced the studio was making a Quest port of Onward back at last year’s ESL VR League Season three championship, stating that the game would would feature cross-play with both Oculus Rift and SteamVR headsets.

The studio has made good on its word, and in the meantime also included Coatsink, the studio behind the Esper VR series and Shadow Point (2019), as publisher.

“I’m incredibly excited for Onward to come to the Oculus Quest: to have players be inspired by the freedom of the platform while at the same time experiencing the realism and immersion that Onward brings to the table. And I think I speak for my whole team when I say we’re excited to see our players get their hands on the game after almost a year of development,” said Buckley.

The Quest version is said to include all of the game’s standard features, including solo and co-op game modes, and multiplayer battles with up to ten players. Bringing a greater focus on realism, Onward doesn’t include mini-maps, or crosshairs, as players rely on real-world communication, shooting, and navigation skills to accomplish objectives.

The release on Quest will, like its PC VR versions, be available in Early Access when it first launches on the Oculus Store on July 30th, priced at $25.

There’s no time frame on when the game is said to leave EA, as the studio says it still needs to add “finishing touches, improving stability, optimisations to the game’s source code, and general polish.”

    Graphics circa 1995.

    • Adrian Meredith

      You clearly weren’t born then

      • Maven

        Graphics is 2004 like. Half-life 2 quality.

        • Adrian Meredith

hl2 was way better than this. This is actually very similar to call of duty 4 …. on the wii https://youtu.be/GNBiMKVq-ic?t=308

Its pretty disappointing that so many quest games look like this e.g. remove the lighting, remove the shaders, massively downgrade the textures. Even unreal tournament running a 64mb savage 4 (with s3tc) had way better texture quality

          • Maven

the only way is to connect it via cable to PC.

          • Kris Bunch

No way, use Virtual Desktop and wifi streaming.

          • PJ

It’s running on a snapdragon 835 and targeting a 72hz refresh rate, I’m actually very impressed with whys the devs are doing with the Quest

      • brubble

Ah yes the pathetic and weak assed age response. ’74

    • sfmike

It’s about gameplay not graphics. Did you forget this is the Oculus Quest?

      • brubble

Ok, if thats all it takes to float your boat, have at it.

  • jimsimonz

soo what happened to Pavlov shack?

    • jimsimonz

though I am looking forward to this :)

    • Maven

Pavlov VR is the best such game. Lots of people playing, great maps and lots of custom new maps, feels realistic (gun look, operation, shooting)

      • RagnarLothbrok

“feels realistic” ? yeah … you sound exactly like someone who has never tried Onward lol. If anything … there’s nothing realistic about Pavlov. That doesn’t mean the game’s bad. If you’d like some quick casual run and gun I guess it’s your thing. But so far there ain’t nothing even close to what Onward offers. The game mechanic , the guns , the handling system … It could be still played as a casual run and gun game in different mods or even offline with bots, but it’s tactical 5v5 pvp aspect is where this game shines. It’s being meant to be played this way, and once you master it and better yet have a team/friends to play with and develop different strats – it’s so satisfying.

        • TechPassion

Contractors is a casual crap cheap game. Pavlov is amazing in every aspect. Do not try to say I am wrong, because you won’t succeed. Onward gameplay for hours can be seen on youtube. No need to buy this!

          • RagnarLothbrok

If you knew better , you should’ve known VR is not very well represented on a monitor/TV lol. You can crap on almost any VR game by looking at it on youtube, and should I explain to you why that is ? I guess not (worth my time). You’re just some Pavlov Fanboy, and tbh the less like you in Onward – the better. You can stick to Pavlov all you want, but don’t try to fool all those who’s just getting into VR as you certainly won’t fool us who have tried all the games lol

          • TechPassion

Are you nuts? VR games look better on monitor (especially my 50 inch 4k one!) than in crap low resolution goggles.

          • RagnarLothbrok

:slapsforhead: In terms of resolution – sure, but in terms of texture models, and overall when compared to any modern pancake (non VR) game, VR looks like old school and the reason for this is hardware limitations. So basically take any of those VR FPS and compare it to a non-VR modern game and there you go. The true magic in VR comes when you’re with your HMD on , not watching on YT or whatever. The presence , the interactions – only then you can appreciate a VR game and it’s only then when you know why you’re willing to sacrifice all the fancy visuals of modern games. So my argument stands…. just because you watched Onward VR on YT and you didn’t liked it – means nothing.

      • PJ

        Pavlov and realistic guns? Haha

        • TechPassion

super realistic. The look, the reloading, the feeling of holding the gun. I shot real ones and can say it is like I described.

          • RagnarLothbrok

By all the crap you just said, I doubt you own a VR let alone shooting real guns lol. Go play minecraft, and stop talking nonsense. You know … having preferences like wanting to play more arcade-like games is one thing, but stating something that’s obvious wrong at it’s core it’s just stupid ;)

    • PJ

      Delayed until next year.

Which by that point Onward and Contractors should have cornered the market on the Quest, plus there’s Solaris off world combat and Population One coming out too.

Hopefully this shows Pavlov off to what it really is, crap. The way the devs have allowed the modded game modes like TTT and Zombie to completely overrun the base game on PC is disgusting, I bought a military shooter, not to babysit kids in pathetic game modes

      • jimsimonz

That’s a pity though. it can’t be that bad it’s by far the most played vr shooter

        • PJ

This is it though, you remove the TTT and Zombie players, and Pavlov will be just low populated as Onward and Contractors

  • Adrian Meredith

Which one of these identical tactical shooters is the best. Been playing with contractors on quest which seem decent and have tried Pavlov shack too

    • Alextended

My favorite is Onward. It’s like Ghost Recon, where Pavlov is like Counter-Strike and Contractors like Call of Duty. Sort of. It’s slower paced, more tactical, more realistic, but also with the best weapons handling and mechanics, very easy to use all the different attachments and gadgets in super intuitive ways.

    • Maven

Pavlov VR is the best one. Guns feel very real – holding, reloading, the look of guns, great sound when these shoot. Lots and lots of new maps, lots of people playing. Pavlov VR is great. Contractors is … crap looking and sounding game. Very “arcade” like. I refunded it. OnWard wants to install monitoring software on PC so no no.

      • Alextended

You sound like a shill and/or cheater, lol. Steam already is “monitoring software” if you wanna be that anal about such a definition. None of your links present easy anti-cheat as doing anything remotely shady or harmful.

        • Maven

WTF is wrong with you? You like Onward installed with pc monitoring software? Play it. Do not spam under all my messages with your bs and link not related to anything.

          • Alextended

Lol, you can spew the same bs twice but getting the same reply twice is “spamming under my messages”. WTF is wrong with YOU if you don’t know public comments can get replies, lol.

          • TechPassion

Steam is not a small company you buy hamburger from. Don’t be soo foolish dude. Steam does not do what EAC does and the way it does. If you close steam, the thing is NOT running in the system, with kernel-level permissions!!! Now, just get lost. I am tired of your bs explanations.

          • Alextended

Epic is a small company you buy hamburgers from, okay then, lmfao. You didn’t tell me you’re professional joker before starting.

      • gothicvillas

Wow so wrong. Contractors is way better than Pavlov and it looks miles better than Pavlov too. I have suspicion you either are troll or have a bad pc or bad headset.

      • RagnarLothbrok

Dude… if you own a PC , cell phone – you’re pretty much covered on the monitoring side you’re so pissed about. You’re delusional if you think you can escape that by not installing selected software lol. It’s the time we’re living in , and if you don’t like it, maybe you should head off to the woods with no cell phone , internet etc …. ;)

    • PJ

There all different in there own right.

Onward is the most tactical, the TTK is really low, and you get hit you very likely to die and sit out the round. PC-Quest crossplay too!

Pavlov in my opinion Is the worst out of the three, TTK is really high, way to high, arcade like game gameplay, and the guns don’t feel good to use at all, it’s the most popular and played on PC purely because of the modded game modes, like Zombies and TTT, take those game modes away and you are left with a player base of a similar size to Onward and Contractors. No PC-Quest either

Contractors is my favourite VR FPS, It sits nicely between Onward realism and Pavlovs arcade gameplay, the TTK feels perfect too, nice map sizes, good selection of weapons (can’t fault the other games in this regard either) PC-Quest too!

  • LoneWuff326

school computer graphics but still worth playing

  • Maven

They should first remove “Easy Anti-Cheat” crap from their PC installer. I bought the game few days ago, excited to play as I like Pavlov VR. Installed it and noticed it wants to install a monitoring crap on my machine, with administrator rights. Never consent to such requests. Product refunded and bye bye. Pavlov VR is better, does not force you to install potential spyware crap with admin rights.

    • Alextended

You sound like a shill and/or cheater, lol. Steam already is “monitoring software” if you wanna be that anal about such a definition. None of your links present easy anti-cheat as doing anything remotely shady or harmful btw, lol.
      https://www.reddit.com/r/vive_vr/comments/cgmqsk/pavlov_developer_on_anticheat/

      • Maven

I wasn’t writing it is doing shady things. but it installs this software in the deepst layer of your system. Would you let some company to control your computer and trust them they are not doing or will not do anything you would not like them to do? Think about it. You pay 20$ for the game and resign from privacy..

        • Alextended

Again, Steam is doing much the same, and you agree that company isn’t actually doing anything shady so the rest is non arguments and theoritecal when practically it does what it says on the tin, anti-cheat for a better play experience. End of story.

          • TechPassion

You try put these words in my mouth. If you like trojan-like software running deep in your Windows system without your knowledge what it is sending and to whom, fine. Give them your banking account details, your wallet and keys to your house.
            I am fine with that.

          • Alextended

If you really think that analogy works (what kind of a bozo does that is not for me to care but okay, for the sake of devil’s advocate) then I guess you’re ok with Valve, Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Apple (whichever of these are applicable to you, I’m sure there’s at least 2, which are enough for this point) having keys to your house but you draw the line at Epic and think anyone who doesn’t do the same is wrong. Lmfao.

          • TechPassion

You work there, obvious. Give all the keys, PINs, send photos of your scanned documents, to who ever you want or post them on the Internet. I do not care. This small crap company is not Microsoft or Valve. Idiotic comparision for what? Because some other people might cheat in their game ha ha, so everybody has to have the instrusive software installed in their Windows kernels? for 20 USD game?!! Dumb to give some company such access to your privacy. If you think it is all fine, your choice. Just don’t try to be smart because the heresies you write are ridiculous.

          • Alextended

You already give access to tons of companies was my point, you give 0 reasons as to why you draw the line at Epic Games, who. I work at Epic because you can’t find valid arguments and spew ignorant accusations about what the software does, okay, joker.

  • blue5peed

Sounds like a very impressive port.

  • PJ

This is huge news, and importantly thery are 1st out of the big three (Pavlov Contractors Onward) to bring the title to the Quest store.

Can’t wait to play against the kids that think Onward is CoD clone haha
