With the reveal of the DecaGear headset last week we wanted to learn more about the company behind the project. We got in touch with Or Kuntzman, the founder & CEO of Megadodo Simulation Games (which is building DecaGear) to learn more about its background and future plans.

First a quick recap. DecaGear is an upcoming PC VR headset that emerged seemingly out of thin air promising big specs and an ambitious price. The headset is claimed to have a 2,160 × 2,160 (4.6MP) per-eye resolution at 90Hz, IPD adjustment, face-tracking with two inward-facing cameras, motion controllers with finger-tracking, hip-tracking, four camera inside-out tracking, and full support for SteamVR content. All supposedly for just $450.

Road to VR spoke with the founder & CEO of Megadodo Simulation Games, the company building DecaGear, to learn more about the company’s development process and how it plans to deliver on its promises.

On his own background, Kuntzman said he’s originally from Israel where he worked as a software developer, later founding an online ad business that he eventually sold to another Israeli ad company.

Following that, he explains, “I moved to South Asia seven and a half years ago, started a fintech company in Singapore, and eventually moved to Bangkok to work on a VR game, which turned into a framework we currently call DecaSpace. Along the way, with a small team of engineers only we decided to work on a new VR hardware targeted to multiplayer gaming.”

Kuntzman said the company, Megadodo Simulation Games—whose website now redirects to the DecaGear site—was founded in early 2018 and has since grown to 20 full time employees (though only 11 are noted on the company’s ‘People’ page) . Megadodo is funded by Kuntzman and “another investor,” he said.

As for development of the DecaGear headset, Kuntzman said the company is already “entering a QA stage where all the software systems are working and the prototypes are printed in-house with Fromlabs printers (except a couple of infrared transparent black parts which we needed to use mold injection for).” A small number of prototypes are expected by the end of the year.

Kuntzman said he understands the skepticism the company has seen following the reveal of its headset.

“There are many people being skeptical about a company that suddenly comes out with a product—out of nowhere, especially a VR headset. We also contributed to the overall skepticism with a stupid mistake with our facial tracking video where Kelly is narrating [video here], we’ve decided to add an opening which was shot much later than the actual in-game part, it didn’t match perfectly and it now invites some legitimacy concerns.” More videos are coming, he said.

Kuntzman also pointed us to a recently published post on the company’s blog which summarizes vision:

  1. Release a PC-VR, high fidelity headset built especially for multiplayer gaming and experiences with facial tracking, natural locomotion based on the hip direction and pressure sensitive hand controllers with all finger tracking.
  2. The system will be available for pre-order in late 2020 for US$459.
  3. SteamVR support means immediate access to thousands of VR games from day one.
  4. The DecaGear SDK allows developers to easily and quickly integrate all of the system’s unique features.
  5. Future plans for a DecaSpace SDKs will allow players to communicate and navigate between games seamlessly in VR.

The last point there, about the DecaSpace SDK, is another ambitious goal from the company beyond just delivering a headset with killer specs and a great price. Apparently based on the work the company was doing prior to pivoting into hardware, DecaSpace is a sort of social foundation that the company hopes will underpin its headset by interconnecting various VR experiences.

While the DecaGear is sort of a physical set of tools the player uses in order to track their body in VR, I see another, in-game set of tools that allows the player to seamlessly move between games without the need to return to a ‘lobby’ or ‘home’ world. Players can video call or chat with their friends, no matter what games they are currently playing and game developers can easily join their game and monetize it in a freemium model in order to allow players to move in and out freely. […]

We will share more details on DecaSpace soon, but it’s worth noting that DecaSpace isn’t another VR social network — there are no rooms or “worlds” that we or the players intend to create. It is a framework that connects and monetizes games within VR.

There’s still plenty more we want to know about Megadodo Simulation Games and DecaGear; we expect to get more details from Kuntzman soon.

      Please don’t spam off-topic links.

      • James Cobalt

I had to block him – he’s doing it in multiple articles and the long lists of videos was making navigating the comments a chore. Also not endeared by the rampant downvoting of comments that aren’t even disagreements with him; just seems random and troll like.

        • Lies by petty children :)

Tg for the block function. Ya blocked.

          • YOU are either a pre puberty child, or grownup no lifer with mental issues. Otherwise you wouldn’t do all that link spamming. Especially since mods continue deleting them. You go back and edit your post to include all those links again.

          • Andrew Jakobs

The fact Benz had to delete the links is already something that he should not have been doing.. You should just have kept it to your comment on the article, which is perfectly fine, but you should not have added all those links.. And certainly not act like a big child when people tell you to stop it, even the mod tells you to stop. Why do you still keep on posting those links after having been told many times by many people not to do it..

      • kuhpunkt

Just ban him. He’s been doing this for a long time.

        • Lol, okay karen. Yablocked.

          • Andrew Jakobs

I’m sorry to say this, oh did you comment on the article, I must have missed that due all your f-ing links… You should only have posted the comment and not the spam, as you’ve been doing that for quite a while now.. As I’ve told you a couple of times now, why not start your own VR-blog if you want these titles to be reviewed/watched..

      • Andrew Jakobs

It’s really time to ban him or at least warn him that this is the last time before he get’s a ban.. He’s doing this over and over and over, even though a lot of people already have told him a gazillion times to not do that.. Hell, I even suggested to contact you to have his own little corner on this site where he can write all the articles related to those video’s he’s spamming day in day out.

    • benz145

This is a good point; it makes sense that they’d just trying to capture eye/eyelid movements for animating avatars but not necessarily with the precision needed for something like foveated rendering.

Maybe ‘gaze-tracking’ would be a better term for imprecise eye-tracking.

    • Why do they give internet access to patients in mental institution where you’re being held?

    • Andrew Jakobs

When will you stop spamming these articles with all these video’s.. you really are a big child doing that over and over again..

  • Lucidfeuer

Why are they SO BAD at design and ergonomics? Valve is not going to save VR anytime soon. Also not mentioning FOV is a direct-to-spam news for me. It’s terrible that one of the most terrible company in consumer and digital product has despite all set a standard for VR that you either at least match or bust, and other corporations have other given-up the future’s biggest market or are just disgusting at it, and Valve can’t seem to fucking get it, can’t they.

    • ComfyWolf

What does Valve have to do with this? From looking it up all they did was provide support for SteamVR integration, that’s it. You really went on a Valve rant there for something that they didn’t even design.

      • Valve confirmed me they only helped with SteamVR integration, they have nothing to do with this headset

  • mepy

Somebody needs to ask them questions about the wireless claim.

    • Nathaniel

the wireless is probably bad tbh

      • Andrew Jakobs

Nah, it’s probably based on wifi 6, just like the PSVR 2 will be..

        • dk

PSVR 2 doesn’t need to be wireless …u r in front of the console and tv when u use it …if it’s using wifi6 5ghz u still need to be in the same room as the transceiver the connection might not be great in the room next to it unless it’s 2.4ghz which is a drop in the quality compared to 5ghz

what would make much more sense for sony is making a quest 2 competitor for $250 with optional wired or wireless connection to the new play station ….is that what u meant

          • Andrew Jakobs

Sorry, but even if you’re in front of the tv, I still would like it to be wireless.. And I don’t know why you would want to go into another room when using the PSVR..
The PS5 has wifi6, and it wouldn’t make any sense to have Wifi6 in the console if it wasn’t for PSVR2…

          • dk

what ….PS5 has wifi6 to work in the best possible way with your network even if u don’t wire it up (if u have wifi6 router) …..for the same reasons high class phones and laptops have wifi6 …to offer u best possible wifi connection

I meant the cheapest to make no hassle best connection possible is via a wire …..being wireless would give u better value if u can use it in more places than just where a wire can reach …..or if it’s standalone that can be used as a display of the ps5

          • Michael

            Sorry, PSVR2 is dead…

        • ViRGiN

Classic Andrew talking out of his ass.
No VR headset for old men.

  • Gonzax

I don’t really care about face or hip tracking but a much larger FOV and wireless would be killer features for me.

  • So apart from making a supercheap and super high-end headset, they also want to make a complicated metaverse. The question is: with what money?

    • James Cobalt

Article says the founder sold an ad business before moving to Asia and starting this company with his own money.

      • Engineer_92

*and another investor*. Im skeptical, but also very hopeful

        • James Cobalt

Yeah it’s a lot for just a couple people but the other investor could be a VC or something. Kind of strange it’s secret. Maybe it’s someone controversial like Kim Jong-un or Palmer Lucky!

    • Jason

Don’t forget they’re also going to make a wireless adapter for the headset. Oh, and a hip based locomotion system. And possibly a perpetual motion device.

  • Ace of Spades

This guy need to change his family name ASAP, they allow it in Israel after you turn 16, so i dont get it why he kept it and even went to work outside, that’s the dumbest thing you can do.

I think people should adapt to International community, if you travel to work or have INT business then you need a name that easily pronounceable and doesn’t sound like something it shouldn’t.

    • James Cobalt

Wow… that’s… Uh… you know it’s super awful (for lots of reasons) to insist people change their name for your own cultural hangups or expectations?

It’s not pronounced like you think it is, but let’s say, for argument’s sake, it is. Lots of sounds in any given language match up with lots of sounds in other languages, but it doesn’t take mental gymnastics to separate sound and meaning, just like you probably have no problem with homonyms and homographs in your native tongue.

The guy became a millionaire through his business; I don’t think his name is holding him back.

      • Ace of Spades

Well Im not a liberal so i dont believe in what you call it “cultural sensitivity”.
People should adapt their names if they work in other countries and especially immigrate. Nobody needs to break their teeth and tongue pouncing horrible names and especially family names.

        • Rupert Jung

          >Well Im not a liberal
          Yes, we can see that.

          • Ace of Spades

            Trump 2020!

        • James Cobalt

Oh, in that case, please share with the class how to pronounce your native American family-name. I presume when your ancestors came to the continent they adopted the local customs and language and changed their family name, yes?

Welcome to the World-Wide Web, where American liberals don’t hold a monopoly on respecting people’s identities.

          • Ace of Spades

This is the dumbest comment ever.
Might always right. Why should anyone do that? Europeans won, its their land, it should be and is the other way around, many native Americans have English names.
I moved to Israel when I was 10, i changed my name to local one but also one that works in the west so i can travel and no one would assume anything about me.

          • ChromeBeta777

A dumb colonialist to boot. Wow you really take the cake.

    • anonymus

even in isreal this family name is a bit stragne but it dosent matter whats his lest name his smh

      • anonymus

        strange

      • Ace of Spades

Never heard about such family name in Israel, Cuntzman :)
Try to write it in Hebrew.

    • Engineer_92

This clown doesn’t realize how much he’s contradicting himself. Working in an international community doesn’t imply that he’ll only be working with english speaking communities. If you think American sounding names are the standard, then you have a lot to learn. A Mandarin Chinese name or an Indian name is much more common due to the simple fact they have larger populations. Get out of your box, its a big world out there.

      • Ace of Spades

Yeah, Indians should change their names first, unpronounceable, teeth shattering names.
If you work in Europe, USA and other western countries, get a normal name.
BTW, Chinese are excellent in this, many have English names, especially in HG or people that work with Europeans.
Try to contact any shop owners on Aliexpress, you always see Sandy, Barbara and so on outright American names, probably not their real ones.

        • Engineer_92

Clown and a troll. Thats a winning combo

          • Ace of Spades

            Soyboy.

          • Engineer_92

            ;)

  • Jan

Nobody cares about Oz Kuntzman being mentioned in the Offhore Leaks database? That doesn’t make his company more trustworthy in my eyes.

    • TechPassion

??? WTF. Who cares about taxes?! Everybody wants to pay less! NORMAL!

  • Ace of Spades

Anyway, this sounds great, what to do with HP G2 pre-order?

If this is real, ill be dumb to waste 910$ on the G2

  • MRTV made a ~14 minute video to say it has 117FOV and two screens/physical IPD.
    https://youtu.be/wknl0h9cuqs

  • ViRGiN

Why is everyone so eager to generate hype? One article was more than enough. Let the company prove itself. They deserve zero benefit of the doubt.

  • Sion12

If this is real, its going to be THE headset to get for just $470, hopefully FOV is not too bad

    • Engineer_92

      117° FOV apparently

      • Sion12

        thats pretty low, too bad

        • Pikachupugs

117 degrees is fine, it’s better than that of the Reverb G2

          • Sion12

Is fine but not good enough for me personally
