Rated Apple’s 2017 App of the Year and Google Play’s 2018 Editor’s Choice Award winner, the original mobile version of Calm has celebrated a measure of success over the years with its growing list of soothing guided meditation routines and nighttime stories to put a restless mind to bed. Today the studio behind Calm released a free VR version for Oculus Go and Gear VR.
Calm for VR offers a selection of 10 of the original mobile app’s guided meditations led by author and head of content Tamara Levitt.
Once you’ve selected a meditation, which addresses a number of subjects such as grief, gratitude, and creativity, users can then choose from a few locations: a mountain lake, a redwood forest, or a white sand beach in Hawaii.
“We have always believed that VR can be a powerful medium for meditation and relaxation,” says Calm.com, Inc. director of product Tony Hsieh. “It has the ability to easily transport and immerse anyone into another reality from anywhere. We couldn’t wait to explore what this meant for Calm.”
The app’s locations are actual physical environments, captured in 3D 180-degree video and spatial audio. Hsieh says the choice to use the video format “allows us to display a higher resolution in the headset and offer a transformative 3D video and audio experience to the user.”
