Crytek has gone head-first into developing The Climb, the upcoming VR game featuring solo free rock climbing. The acrophobia – or fear of heights – from watching their first video developer diary is palpable to say the least.
Team members working on The Climb talk from a place of experience in Crytek’s new ‘video developer diary’, as they climb indoors two times per week in a bid to understand the physical nuances of the heart-pounding risk and reward structure familiar to climbers.
Pushing yourself to the limit can get you to the top in record time, but pushing yourself too far can send you plummeting in the opposite direction just as quickly.

Team members like Executive Produce Elijah Freeman, who is also overseeing work on upcoming VR title Robinson: The Journey, explains some of the new territory The Climb is traversing.
“One of my favorite moments developing the climb was early on in the prototype stages. At the very essence of the mechanic, we realized this was something unique, something hadn’t experienced before,” said Freeman.
The ongoing video dev diary will follow progress on The Climb, which is slated to release around the Oculus Rift’s launch date of March 28th. For more updates, check out Crytek’s Tumblr page for in-depth coverage of new climbing environments and progress on the upcoming VR title.
