‘Fantastic Contraption’ Devs Announce VR Remake for HTC Vive, Coming to PAX Prime

Fantastic Contraption, the free 2008 building game that challenged players to use a variety of tools to get their contraptions from point A to point B, is receiving a 3D makeover for virtual reality on the HTC Vive.

According to the game’s website, the new version “has been designed from the ground up to be a room-scale VR game.” To envision their final product, the creators ask potential players to “imagine walking around a grassy island floating in the sky, making a contraption the size of a horse with your hands, then watching it roll out into the world.”

Northway Games and Radial Games are collaborating on Fantastic Contraption. Northway Games is responsible for mobile and PC games such as Deep Under the Sky and Incredipede, while Radial Games is behind Rockets Rockets Rockets and Monster Loves You, among other titles.

Accompanying the announcement is a video showing off the new design (above) and explaining the ethos behind the game, which basically sums to, “It’s not a world that you walk into and that happens around you; you happen to Fantastic Contraption.” The video also talks up the importance of the Vive’s technology to the game, walking around is apparently very important to the experience.

Most exciting of all is that the rebuilt Fantastic Contraption will be featured at PAX Seattle in Vive demo rooms at the Sheraton hotel. If you are lucky enough to be attending, this one looks to be worth checking out.
