First Emmy for a VR Project Goes to Sleepy Hollow on the Oculus Rift

Here’s a positive sign of the VR industry’s encroachment on the entertainment industry proper, a recognised, industry award given to a virtual reality project. In this case, the Sleepy Hollow Virtual Reality Experience for the Oculus Rift DK2

The Emmy’s have now been running since 1949 and seek to celebrate and award the best in breed in US television. Essentially, it’s the Oscar’s for TV. And at this year’s awards, a small landmark for the fledgling VR industry has been marked as a VR experience has been awarded an honour for the very first time.

The Sleepy Hollow Virtual Reality Experience was designed as a way to promote the Fox TV spin off show of Tim Burton’s 1999 gothic horror movie of the same name. The experience debuted at 2015’s San Diego Comic Con and was quite the hit at the show, demoing to 1000s of attendees.

Fox enlisted content studio Secret Location for the gig and the team, who identify themselves as a group that “…combines cutting-edge technology with
traditional storytelling to create powerful experiences.” The studio set about creating an experience that gives users the ‘opportunity’ to experience what it’d be llike to have their heads severed and dangled in front of the series’ lead character, The Headless Horseman.

The Sleepy Hollow: VR Experience was honoured in the ‘Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media’ category at the Emmy awards ceremony on Saturday. Joining IM360 in receiving awards for immersive content production, with their 360 music video app AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience app for mobile users.
