Google’s annual developer and technology conference begins today, and for virtual reality fans there may be a few nice surprises in store, namely the much rumoured Android VR and Google’s escalation in the immersive technology sector.

The event kicks off at 10:00AM PST (your timezone here) today with an opening keynote which aims to update the world on “product and platform innovation at Google”, with CEO Sundar Pichai taking to the stage to present.

Road to VR‘s Ben Lang wrote about the kinds of things VR fans might expect from Google I/O and Android VR as a whole and this year virtual reality at Google gets its own mini keynote presentation on Thursday – so it’ll be interesting to see how prominent Android VR is in the opening keynote.

You can follow the keynote along in the form of a standard, 2D livestream format – which you should be able to find below. But if you’re interested in catching the show in 360 degrees, see further below for the immersive version – also streamed live and embedded below for your convenience.

Road to VR are on the ground at Google I/O this week to bring you the latest from the show.

Based in the UK, Paul has been immersed in interactive entertainment for the best part of 27 years and has followed advances in gaming with a passionate fervour. His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Paul joined forces with Ben to help build the new Road to VR in preparation for what he sees as VR’s coming of age over the next few years.

Interesting, Google is making a version of the Cardboard platform with some of the same performance/restrictions as GearVR. I’m glad they’re including a wiimote.. it’s not ideal, but it’s way better than the de facto “neck mouse”

Great Google setting a standard for Android VR platform.
As well as the device design as well as a deployment platform.
Looking forward to it for development.

Google just smoked Apple. Hell, they smoked everyone including Amazon and Facebook (Oculus.) The world is theirs now and I’ve got terribly mixed feelings about that.

Apple could feasibly have something more reliable, and Amazon could feasibly fork Android and have something more reliable. Don’t smoke your chickens until they’ve hatched!

Apple bought the best AR software company, we need to see what they are up to later on, it might not be focus on VR but AR instead for them, just like microsoft with hololens.
Oculus only initiated the VR for consumers but they are behind on the consumer final product, as is their samsung gear a fail due to closed platform and limited to just a few expensive samsung phones.
