Visiting 10 cities, showcasing 20 curated, innovative and immersive experiences from around the world, the Kaleidoscope VR Film festival heads out on a road show designed to celebrate leading innovators in cinematic VR content and to bring it to a wider audience.

With 360-degree immersive media becoming a hot topic amongst the big players in Hollywood and virtual reality opening up new avenues for artists to explore, we’ve seen some pretty amazing stuff emerge in the last few years.

From linear 360 film-making, to rendered cinematic VR experiences to immersive semi-interactive dioramas created especially for the platform, the rise of virtual reality has brought with it huge innovation. The Kaleidoscope VR Film festival aims to highlight some of the best examples in this new wave of entertainment and the talent behind the projects.

Kaleidoscope was founded in May 2015 by entrepreneur René Pinnell and former Industrial Light & Magic technical director Michael Breymann, the company says its mission is to “…empower independent VR artists by promoting their work, producing original content, fostering new talent and raising the visibility of VR as the new frontier of film and entertainment” – a lofty goal indeed. The VR Film festival is the company’s first step along that road, almost literally.

Presented by Vrideo, described as “the world’s most fully built out immersive video platform”, each festival event will involve talks and demos from top VR filmmakers and industry members. Audiences will also have the opportunity to experience the full line-up of films on Gear VR equipment supplied by Samsung, as well as Oculus VR headsets.

Based in the UK, Paul has been immersed in interactive entertainment for the best part of 27 years and has followed advances in gaming with a passionate fervour. His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Paul joined forces with Ben to help build the new Road to VR in preparation for what he sees as VR’s coming of age over the next few years.
