The VR community is awesome and growing rapidly every day and the gatherings that have sprung from the collective enthusiasm and passion for virtual reality are now many and diverse with some blossoming into fully fledged conventions.

We got word from Henry Velez, a VR enthusiast and fledgling podcaster about a VR Meetup he’s organising out in North Carolina is being co-hosted at EPIC Games (they of Unreal Engine / Gears of War fame) at their Cary Offices. Henry tells us that there are a few slots left for any VR enthusiasts or merely VR curious who live in and around the area. This is actually the 2nd event for the RTP VR Enthusiasts group.

Virtual Reality and a visit to one of the most important HQs in games today? How could you pass this up? If you’re interested, pop along to the meetup homepage and signup. And if you do go, let us know what you see.

Based in the UK, Paul has been immersed in interactive entertainment for the best part of 27 years and has followed advances in gaming with a passionate fervour. His obsession with graphical fidelity over the years has had him branded a ‘graphics whore’ (which he views as the highest compliment) more than once and he holds a particular candle for the dream of the ultimate immersive gaming experience. Having followed and been disappointed by the original VR explosion of the 90s, he then founded RiftVR.com to follow the new and exciting prospect of the rebirth of VR in products like the Oculus Rift. Paul joined forces with Ben to help build the new Road to VR in preparation for what he sees as VR’s coming of age over the next few years.

Dang, I’d LOVE to go, but that’s a bit far from me. Are there any more upcoming meetups/events in the near future in the MD/WV/PA area?

    • Henry Velez

Hey, this is what happened to me. I didn’t see any meetups in my area so I decided to start one. The first thing I did was gauge the community response by posting on reddit.com/r/oculus – and there were a few users who popped up asking for a meetup. You may get lucky (definitely) and someone may have a DK1, or DK 2) they are willing to share. I started with one DK1, mine, and others who wanted to attend had their own hardware. For the 2nd meetup we have about 7 Rifts, and other hardware. I’ve learned that I don’t have to be an expert of developer just excited to bring people together!

These vr conventions are, mark my words, going to explode in popularity to the point where it’s going to rival convention live CES and other tech shows. And it’s not just gaming either, other industries are paying close attention to vr and how it can benefit their business and that’s going to be the driving force behind mainstream adoption of vr.

This is what I’m hoping for! I am trying to get ahead of the curve. This (hopefully) will be just the beginning, I’ve been watching other meetup’s (SVVR/VRLA) and getting inspiration for other types of meetups, game jams, etc. I just want to be a part of the VR explosion. Again thanks Road to VR for highlighting this!
