Pre-ordering Oculus Rift Will Reserve Your Spot in Line for Touch Later This Year

Oculus Rift pre-orders open tomorrow (Wednesday January 6th) at 8AM PT. Founder Palmer Luckey this evening is providing a few last minute details, including the fact that pre-ordering the Rift will reserve your spot in line to pre-order the company’s Touch VR controller later this year.

Among a number of tweets this evening, Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey says that those pre-ordering the Rift will also lock in your spot in line to the Oculus Touch when it becomes available for pre-order later this year.

Oculus had said back when they announced Touch in mid-2015 that it would open for pre-orders alongside the Rift, and it seems this will remain true in some sense, despite the company recently announcing that Touch would ship in the 2nd half of 2016 as opposed to the first half, as was initially stated.

Luckey also talked about how Oculus wants to avoid some negative aspects of pre-orders commonly found in the games industry.

“Rift preorders are different from most of the games industry. You don’t get charged until we ship – no deposit lock-in, no bonus pressure,” Luckey tweeted.

Luckey mentions “no bonus pressure” referring to perks given exclusively to pre-orderees of certain games, meant to make people want to pre-order or risk missing out on aspects of the experience like special items or free/early access to new content. For some, reserving a spot in line for Touch pre-orders may be seen as a bonus, however.

The price of the Oculus Rift is still unknown, save for a ballpark range between $351 and $999. We’re expecting the official price to be revealed tomorrow morning.
