Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland today revealed a teaser for an upcoming VR game called Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality based on the cartoon’s lovably weird universe. The HTC Vive demo of the game will make its debut at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego.
Developed by Owlchemy Labs, most recently known for the HTC Vive launch title Job Simulator, and published by Adult Swim Games, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is what Owlchemy Labs CEO Alex Schwartz calls “the combination of our favorite TV show of all time combined with Job Simulator.”
Schwartz told us in an interview that the newly revealed Rick and Morty VR title would be “its own standalone game,” with planned release on the HTC Vive. No release date or price has been announced.
“Were building it into a full game. We don’t know how long it’s going to be, or price, or anything like that. It’s not a marketing experiment, it’s a game,” he said.
“[Justin Roiland] has been helping with the vision and the funny jokes. Generally it’s been a great relationship working back and forth and they’ve given us carte blanche on what to do with the story. The Rick and Morty IP is very open—if people get killed off you can say it was another universe. It’s just a great game to be experimenting with and the stories and characters are easy to play around with.”
And you won’t just be hanging out in Rick’s garage-laboratory. According to Schwartz, you’re going to be able to jump through portals into other worlds using Rick’s portal gun.
“I can’t say much yet [about the gameplay]… aside from portals, which are awesome in room scale; they’re a great way to move the player around,” he said.
The full game will feature voice work from other actors on the show besides Roiland, who does voices for both Morty and Rick.
Demos will be free and open to Comic-Con attendees at the ‘Adult Swim on the Green’ between July 21-24 from 11a.m.-6p.m. More information will be posted on the Adult Swim Presents Facebook page.
Oh, and if you’re wondering what that weird squishy (and slightly unsettling) thing is in the teaser trailer, it’s called a ‘plumbus’.
