Just announced at a Star Wars “Meet ILMxLab” panel at the Star Wars Celebration expo in London, Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine will be released for the HTC Vive on Steam for free on Monday 18 July.
One of the highlight experiences of a packed VR-laden show that was VRDC / GDC in March, ILMxLabs, the immersive technology wing of Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine is the groups most promising VR experiment yet. Now, ILMxLabs have revealed at their own panel at the Star Wars Celebration event in London that the title will be made free to HTC Vive owners on Monday July 18.
Road to VR‘s Ben Lang went hands on with the experience, that was shown at GDC 2016 in March and this is what he had to say about it:
At only about 10 minutes long, Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine was only a tease that left me wanting much, much more. If ILMxLab has their way, it sees likely we will get just that. The group says experiences like this are about learning what works and how to tell stories through immersive media like AR and VR, but their grand vision is to not only learn from such experiments, but to eventually create something that’s released widely for everyone to enjoy. Exactly what form that comes in, the lab isn’t saying just yet, but it’s clear that they’re heading in the right direction.
ILMxLab are rapidly becoming one of the most exciting prospects for virtual and reality content. The team also recently announced a partnership with the mysterious and much hyped Magic Leap on what was described as a “collaboration lab” – producing augmented reality content to utilise Magic Leap’s reportedly impressive hardware.
If you own an HTC Vive, we strongly recommend you get your hands on Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine when it pops up on Steam this coming Monday.
