System Shock 3 is Coming, Dev Gauges Interest in VR

Classic PC first person RPG horror title System Shock is getting a sequel, and the developer is actively gauging interest in virtual reality as development of the sequel, System Shock 3, gets under way.

Older readers, or those into their retro-gaming, will know that the System Shock series of titles for the PC are regarded as some of the finest games around and hugely influential to boot. As developer Otherside Entertainment embarks on development for a third instalment in the series, the company’s newsletter chooses to make one of only six sign-up questions, one to gauge the reader’s interest in VR.

A countdown on a teaser website appeared a couple of days ago, indicating that we can expect more news on the new title to appear in just a few days. Only a few details have been leaked thus far, but according to Polygon, the development team include concept artist Robb Waters and Otherside founder Paul Neurath, who led the series’ development at original developer Looking Glass Studios.

This of course is no guarantee whatsoever of System Shock 3‘s inclusion of immersive headset support, but it’s interesting to see developers testing the waters in this way. We’d be lying if the prospect of seeing such an iconic and genre-defining franchise including virtual reality support doesn’t fill us with anticipation. If you feel the same, why not sign up and let the developer know you’re keen.
