VRLA is quickly becoming one of the biggest VR meetups in the LA region. After a successful second event this month, the organization is announcing their third gathering at New Deal Studios on August 16th. Hopefully the timing will be just right for people to try out the Oculus Rift DK2 which is expected to be in developer’s hands by the end of this month.

vrlalogo2By many accounts VRLA #2, held at the MxR Lab, was a huge success. VRLA co-organizer Cosmo Scharf told me the event was host to more than 200 attendees. You can see in the video above a recap of the event. Scharf prepared this announcement about the next VRLA meetup for Road to VR:

We are excited to announce that VRLA #3 will be held on Saturday, August 16th, at New Deal Studios, a visual effects studio that produced movies like Inception and The Dark Knight. Come for a day of exclusive virtual reality demos and presentations on their massive soundstage. It will be our biggest and baddest event thus far, offering the most VR experiences to date!

VRLA sits at the intersection of virtual reality, cinema, science, entertainment, and the maker movement. Listen to presentations from the leading minds of LA, who will discuss the burgeoning industry of VR. Tour New Deal Studios, a studio typically closed to the public, and see how they build breathtaking worlds with practical effects and miniature models.

Exhibitors include:

  • Jaunt VR: Meet the people making cinematic VR a reality with their custom 3D 360 degree camera rig and stitching software
  • Darknet: Play as an elite hacker in cyberspace in the successor to the game that won last year’s VR game jam.
  • Kite & Lightning: Meet the LA-based studio making incredible VR experiences you can experience with your mind and body (including “Senza Peso” and “Genesis”).
  • Apogee: Try out the advanced, professional audio devices for ultimate quality in sound recording, gearing up for immersive VR applications.
  • Zeus: See the world’s first all-in-one 3D printer that allows users to scan, fax, and print real objects with a touch of a button. 3D printing is the prime technology responsible for today’s VR hardware startup revolution, enabling engineers to rapidly prototype their hardware and allowing them to iterate upon designs with unprecedented speed.

  • Getting started with VR in Unreal Engine 4 – Waqas Hussain

As we continue to build a community bringing together like minded individuals from VR, tech, and entertainment, we strive to push the limits with our events. Thanks to the overwhelming, unprecedented support to see VR dreams realized, we had a lot of help making our first events free. However, to help keep up our DIY spirit, defray costs, and continue to make these events bigger and better, we are requesting a modest fee of $10 for entry to this event.
