Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions is an upcoming physical and digital trading card game coming to iOS, Android, and PC in July. Announced at GDC 2018, the augmented reality experience uses PlayFusion’s proprietary ‘Enhanced Reality Engine’ to unlock gameplay options on the physical cards when using mobile devices.
Game studio PlayFusion, who are also a robotics and AI company, and makers of AR-enhanced trading card game Lightseekers (2017), are bringing their expertise in mixed-media and augmented reality to the Warhammer universe. Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions is described as “an all-new way for tabletop war gaming and for Trading Card Game fans to experience the Warhammer Age of Sigmar universe.”
The mixed-media approach works in two ways: the physical trading card game, which is said to feature “hundreds of collectible cards” for strategic deck building, can be enhanced with AR, and the digital trading card game can be enhanced by importing the physical cards for use in the digital world. While we aren’t sure exactly what that entails, the announcement describes a “completely immersive augmented reality experience” to accompany the physical cards, and “unique physical-to-digital experiences” for playing the digital game online.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions represents the beginning of a new partnership between PlayFusion and Games Workshop, who plan to bring new expansions and card reveals “for many years to come.”
Pre-registration for Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions can be found on the game’s official website.
